Applications are invited from an experienced individual for this full time post
comprising 0.6 WTE Perinatal Psychiatry and 0.4 WTE General Adult Psychiatry. The
perinatal component is a newly created post due to service expansion. The General
Adult component is also a new post which is being created in order to even out
service imbalances.
Perinatal component (0.6 WTE)
Responsibilities will be shared, along with one other full time Consultant, at the
Perinatal Mental Health Service, situated adjacent to the West of Scotland Mother
and Baby Unit at Leverndale Hospital. The current service provides comprehensive
mother and baby inpatient care for the west of Scotland (delivered population
approximately 26,000 births/year), and specialised community and maternity liaison
services to the Greater Glasgow area of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The new
post is part of an overall redesign to ensure the community and maternity liaison
services meet the needs of the total delivered population of NHS Greater Glasgow

Community Mental Health Team, and additional staff in other disciplines will be
appointed at the same time. The successful applicant will be expected to work

DUTIES OF THE POST
Perinatal Component
The successful applicant will be expected to work with colleagues to provide a
comprehensive community and maternity liaison perinatal mental health service to
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The appointee will also provide cross-cover for the
West of Scotland MBU.
The MBU opened in 2004 at the Southern General Hospital. In January 2014 it
relocated to purpose-built accommodation at Leverndale Hospital. It has six beds and
is staffed by a senior charge nurse, mental health nurses, nursery nurses and nursing
assistants, and sessional time from a core trainee, health visitor, consultant
psychologist, social worker and occupational therapist. A local general practice is
contracted to provide primary care services for babies. The MBU is fully accredited
through the RCPsych CCQI Perinatal Quality Network.
The community service currently provides assessment and care for pregnant and
postnatal women in the Greater Glasgow area in outpatient, home and other
community settings. A maternity liaison service is provided to the Princess Royal
Maternity Hospital and Southern General Maternity Unit. In addition, the service
provides pre-pregnancy assessment for women with at high risk of severe perinatal
mental illness and those on complex psychotropic regimes. The community service is
staffed by a nurse team leader, community psychiatric nurses, a community nursery
nurse, and sessional time from a core trainee, nurse consultant, consultant
psychologist and social worker. The community service is a member of the RCPsych
CCQI Perinatal Quality Network (first review scheduled for late 2014).
Following expansion into Clyde, a maternity liaison service will also be provided to the
Royal Alexandra Hospital and to birthing units at the Vale of Leven District General
Hospital and Inverclyde Royal Hospital. Additional nursing and administrative staff will
be recruited as part of the expansion of service.
Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrists have expertise in the assessment, prevention,
diagnosis and management of mental disorders co-occurring or newly arising in
pregnancy or the postnatal period, and with the assessment and facilitation of the
mother-infant relationship and infant development in the context of maternal mental
illness. They also provide preconception advice to high-risk women and advise
patients and professionals on the use of psychotropic medication during pregnancy
and breastfeeding.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide a comprehensive range of
services to pregnant and postnatal women from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde,
and cross-consultant cover to the West of Scotland MBU, and to work effectively as
part of a specialised multidisciplinary team. He/she will participate in the On Call Rota
and cover for colleagues during absence in line with arrangements set out in the
National Terms and Conditions. The On Call Rota covers the whole of South
Glasgow and full time Consultants are on call once in 40 days. There will be a
possibility of opting out of on-call duties. Domiciliary visits, court reports, Mental
Health Act/Adults with Incapacity work and liaison assessments will be undertaken as
required. Duties also include continuing clinical responsibility for the patients allowing
for all proper delegation to, and training of, staff. The post-holder will be based at the
Perinatal Mental Health Service, Leverndale Hospital. Outpatient clinics are held at a
number of locations throughout the health board area.
General Adult component
The post-holder will work along with the other 2.8 wte Consultants providing adult
mental health services across East Renfrewshire. The Eastwood team is well
established and provides a comprehensive adult psychiatric service to the Eastwood
catchment area in East Renfrewshire. The post holder is expected to work
predominantly with inpatients based in Ward 3, Leverndale hospital. There is
dedicated junior doctor input and access to a range of multi-disciplinary resources
including Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy, Clinical Pharmacy, Dietetics and
Inpatient Psychology. The successful candidate will also be expected to maintain
close links with the community team through regular attendance at the weekly
community multidisciplinary team meetings. There will be one session of SPA time,
shared with perinatal psychiatry, to support Continuing Professional Development.
South Glasgow has an active internal teaching programme and there are also
considerable opportunities for involvement in teaching, audit and research. This is a
new post and there is considerable room to develop the nature of the general adult
duties as the post becomes established.
5.
TEACHING/ADMINISTRATION
The post holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of
patients and the proper function of the clinical team including appraisal and nonclinical supervision of medical staff and clinical supervision of non-medical staff. He
or she will also be expected to participate in the broader aspect of administration and
management within the South Glasgow Division of Psychiatry and within Eastvale.
It is expected that the successful candidate will take part in Job Planning, Appraisal,
Peer Review and Continuing Professional Development. Participation in audit or
research is encouraged. The post holder will be actively involved in the teaching of
undergraduate medical students. It is anticipated, in recognition of this, that Glasgow
University will grant the status of Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Psychological
Medicine. In addition the post holder will be expected to participate in the
postgraduate teaching of medical staff and staff of other disciplines.
