Definition of Terms:
4. Advanced (A level)
The student candidate demonstrates an active cooperation and broad willingness to participate in classroom
activities with both the teacher and the students when appropriate. Report contains very complete information
and demonstrates many of the Conceptual Framework attributes. All questions answered clearly and
completely. Answers show high degree of reflection/thought and the ability to connect principles learned in
class to practices observed in the field. Presentation overall is superior quality.
3. Proficient (B level)
The student candidate is cooperative and willing to participate in classroom activities with both the teacher and
the students when prompted. Report contains complete information and demonstrates some of the Conceptual
Framework attributes. All questions answered clearly and completely. Answers show a moderate degree of
reflection/thought and the ability to connect principles learned in class to practices observed in the field.
Presentation overall is of excellent quality.
2. Progressing (C level)
The student candidate demonstrates a minimal understanding of the need for cooperative classroom
participation. Report contains information and demonstrates few of the Conceptual Framework attributes. All
questions answered. Answers show a lesser degree of reflection/thought and lesser ability to connect principles
learned in class to practices observed in the field. Presentation overall is of good quality.
1. Unacceptable (D level)
This candidate exhibits a distinct lack of understanding of the educational process. Serious deficiencies in the
knowledge, skills and dispositions to be a teacher are apparent. Report omits some information and
demonstrates an overall lack of the Conceptual Framework attributes. Some questions are not answered.
Answers show little reflection/thought and the inability to connect principles learned in class to practices
observed in the field. Presentation overall is of poor quality.
The Observation Report is the student’s response to and reflection on the classroom observation
experience. Please use the rating scale above to assess the student on Conceptual Framework (CF)
dimensions using answers to individual questions as listed on the chart below and your overall impression
of the Observation Report. The rater may evaluate the overall tone and presentation of the report, the
classroom teacher’s rating and comments, in addition to the specific questions listed below. The CF
attributes listed are given as guides to evaluating the student’s understanding and ability to recognize
those attributes when observing a classroom teacher in action.
