AT LUNCH IN ROOM 3101 FOR ALL MEMBERS to plan upcoming field trips, finalize
sweater designs, sign up for Adelante Mujer Latina Convention and begin a new
fundraiser. Lots of things to do and all members are needed! PLEASE ATTEND!!!
Congratulations to the following Hoover students who competed in the Surf Bowl
(oceanography competition) at USC on Saturday! Yervand Azatian, Justin Sun, Inseon
Hwang, Jonathan Choi and Karmela Castro! You made Hoover proud! Do it again next
year!

special someone will be serenaded by HHS Choir members on Friday, February 11, during
class. Come order your Singing Valentine during lunch in either the upper or lower quad.

Seniors who are interested in the UCLA Alumni Scholars Club (Juniors are encouraged
to come to be prepared for applying Senior year.) The deadline to apply for the UCLA
Alumni Scholars Club is Tuesday, February 15!
SOPHIA BRADY HAS WON THE REGIONAL COMPETITION FOR THE NATIONAL
POETRY OUT LOUD CONTEST!!! The competition was very tough this year but the
audience clearly loved Sophia’s dazzling presentations of her poems. Now we will have
an opportunity to congratulate her for winning the Southern region and cheer her on as
she goes off to the State Championship next month! Then, hopefully, off to Washington
DC! Bravo, Sophia, we are so proud and impressed!
Juniors and Seniors: If you are interested in Speech and would like to try for a $500
prize for a High School Oratory Contest, find out how to write a 3-minute speech and have
something great for your college transcripts! There will be 6-$500 prizes awarded!

Woodbury University in Burbank will be hosting a free Financial Aid Workshop on
Saturday, February 19, from 9:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. This workshop will consist of an
overview of the financial aid process, a step-by-step review of the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application, as well as answer any questions.
All prospective students and family members are welcome to participate in this
workshop. Lunch will be provided. RSVP by calling them at 818-252-5221 or by

Looking for some Community Service? Want to do another event to raise money for
cancer? Join the 5K Stand for Hope Run/Walk on February 26 at the Rose Bowl in
Pasadena. Cost is $10 to participate and you get a shirt! See Mrs. Vargas for details and
a permission slip!
The ROP Water Safety/Lifeguard class offered at GHS gives students the required
criteria to apply to the City of Glendale for lifeguards, assistant pool managers and pool
managers positions! Sign up for this class in the College-Career Center and check out
the pay offered for these positions! Deadline for apps is March 18, 2011!
Awesome summer opportunity to be a part of the Los Angeles Pediatric Society Career
Program is open to Juniors and Seniors for purposes of shadowing various medical
professionals. The program runs M-F for 8 hours. There are 2, 3, and 4-week programs.
Financial Aid is available. For more information, visit www.lapedsoc.org. Deadline is
February 25.
Seniors: Please return your GPA Verification forms to the Counseling Office as soon
as possible. The deadline is fast approaching.
The Armenian and Spanish exam will be administered at Glendale High on February 26
and the Arabic, Korean, Russian and Tagalog exams will be administered at Glendale
High on March 19. Registration forms for the exams are available in the Counseling
Office.
10th Grade CAHSEE Parent Night: All parents of 10th graders are invited to hear
valuable information about the California High School Exit Exam, which is a mandatory
state exam that will be administered to all 10th graders on March 8 and 9. Please join
administrators, teachers and counselors in the Hoover Library Wednesday night,
February 16, from 6:30-8:00, for this very important meeting.
COLLEGE - CAREER INFORMATION
Cornell University, in New York, and the University of Notre Dame, in Indiana, is
offering students in grades 10-12 an opportunity to attend summer college programs.

If you applied for the EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) for a Cal State school
and have questions about this additional application...please see Jonathan, our Cal State

USC is offering summer classes to students who will be in grades 10 to 12 next year.

Check the Deadline
The City of Glendale Commission on the Status of Women is accepting nominations
for the Gem of Glendale Award: a $1,000 scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded
to one outstanding male or female who has contributed community service in areas such
as: homelessness, health, leadership, and financial literacy. For more eligibility
information or to pick up an application, please visit the College-Career Center!
Most colleges/universities offer their own scholarships once you have completed their
applications.
Samsung Corporation is offering a $10,000 scholarship to any Senior who can best
answer the question: “Is Technology crucial to a live presentation or is it just a crutch?”

more details.
Seniors who plan to attend USC in the fall: the Norman Topping Scholarship is
available for those students with high financial need who demonstrate an extraordinary
level of community awareness. See Mrs. Samore in the Counseling Office for more
details. Deadline is February 11.
Seniors: If you are part of Hoover's Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and
interested in a $500 scholarship come see Ms. Ibarra in the Counseling Office.
Seniors: This is the time to be focusing on scholarships...You can receive a
scholarship presented by the Americana at Brand entitled "The Spirit of American Youth".
Two graduating seniors may be awarded $10,000 by writing an essay on how they've
contributed to the betterment of their communities and creating a brighter future for the
next generation. Please come to the Counseling Office or College-Career Center for more
information on this scholarship and on others.
