DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC
ENGINEERING
COURSE OBJECTIVES

To target engineers with suitable qualifications to further their academic excellence in
their fields of interest.
To enhance independent research and production of new ideas and products in the area of
electrical engineering.
1.PROGRAMMES STRUCTURE AND REGULATIONS
1.1.1 A post graduate diploma shall be done by course work, examination and project report.
This is a full time course and shall extend for a minimum period of twelve (12) calendar months
1.1.2 Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering shall be done by course work,
examination and thesis.
1.1.3 The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering course shall extend over a minimum
period of 18 calendar months. The minimum period shall be six (6) months for a candidate
admitted after successfully completing the corresponding JKUAT postgraduate diploma, and
thus who will already have covered the coursework part of the MSc programme.
1.1.4 No candidate for the Master of Science course shall be registered as a full time student for
more than 36 calendar months and for a candidate registered after obtaining the postgraduate
diploma the period shall be 24 calendar months.
1.1.5 Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering may be offered in any one of the
following specialized areas:
i.
Control Engineering
ii.
Power Electronics
iii.
Power Systems
1.1.6 A candidate in either course shall take four (4) core course units and at least four (4)
elective course units
1.1.7 A unit is defined as the equivalent of fifty (5) 1¬hour lectures. For this purpose two (2)
hours of tutorial and three (3) hours of laboratory work is taken to be equivalent to one lecture
hour.
1.1.8 Each candidate shall take eight (8) units in his chosen specialized area of study.
1.1.9 The first year of study for the MSc shall be devoted to course work and examinations. The
second year of study shall be devoted to carrying out research and presentation of thesis.
1.1.10 A candidate :
(i) Registered for the MSc. Degree after completing the corresponding postgraduate diploma, and
thus the coursework part of the MSc programme, shall be required to only successfully complete
an MSc Thesis.
(ii) Who obtains registration as an MSc candidate after completing and graduating from the
Postgraduate Diploma will be required to submit afresh research proposal and undertake
additional research work commensurate with the scope for an MSc proposal previously
submitted for the Postgraduate Diploma shall not be accepted.
(iii) Who successfully completes the first year of . study and does 'not wish to go to the second
year for whatever reason, may qualify for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical
Engineering, if in addition he/she undertakes project work as stipulated in the Postgraduate
diploma in Electrical Engineering regulation.
(iv) May be allowed by change his/her registration status from one of a Masters Degree student
to Postgraduate Diploma before the end of the sixth week of the second semester of the first year
of study.
2. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The following shall be eligible for registration for the Post Graduate Diploma and the degree of
master of Science in Electrical Engineering.
2.1 A holder of at least second class honours, Upper Division, Bachelors of Science degree in
Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Electronic and Computer Engineering; or
Telecommunication and Information Engineering of JKUAT.
2.2 A holder of at least second class honours, upper division, Bachelor of Science degree in
Electrical Engineering, from any other institution, which is recognized by the University Senate
as being of equivalent academic status to the programmes in 4.1; or
2.3 A holder of a Bachelor of Science degree of at least second class honours, upper division, in
a related field which is recognized by the University Senate as an adequate prerequisite for the
MSc. In Electrical Engineering.
2.4 Holders of a second class honours, lower division, Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical
and Electronic Engineering; Electronic and computer Engineering or Telecommunication and
Information Engineering of JKUAT, or of any other institution, which is recognized by the
University Senate as being of equivalent academic status, and who in addition must show proof
of either two years relevant experience and professional development or academic advancement
through research and publication since graduation with the bachelors degree.
2.5 A holder of other qualifications recognized by JKUAT Senate as being equivalent to 4.1, 4.2
and 4.3.
3. HOW TO APPLY
For the self sponsored students, advertisement is usually through the press. The application
forms are then obtainable from the office of the Principal, College of Engineering and
Technology, JKUAT, upon payment of a non¬refundable fee of Kshs. 1,500.00 for Kenyan
Citizens and US$50.00 for Non-Citizens.
