CURRICULUM VITAE

Name Lisbeth Caroline Tuckey (nee Underwood)

During my initial ten and a half years of general practice, I gained experience in most aspects of small animal work. I have worked in large hospital and city practices where I gained valuable clinical and marketing skills. I have also worked in smaller, more specialised practices of which I have taken sole charge on numerous occasions, for periods of up to 4 weeks at a time.

I have supervised both small animal and avian (psittacine) quarantine stations and I have worked as an L.V.I. (export certification of small animals, import and export of birds, poultry and hatching eggs).

I enjoy small animal medicine and surgery but have also gained considerable experience in treating 'exotic' pets - first opinion and referral cases including psittacines, raptors, children's pets and reptiles.

I have been mentioned in a directory of avian vets, published by 'Birdkeeper' magazine and have lectured on 'Nursing Exotics' to the Lancashire branch of the Veterinary Nursing

Association and 'Nursing Birds' to the BSAVA North West Region nurses' programme. I have also given talks to Girl Guide and school groups on aspects of life as a veterinary surgeon.

In April 1988, Mr. B.H. Coles MRCVS and myself were co-authors of a paper entitled '

Repair of the Traumatic Oronasal Fistula in the Cat with a Prosthetic Acrylic Implant', published in the Veterinary Record, 1988, 122, 359 - 360 .

I was North West Region BSAVA CSTF 'Petsavers' representative 1995/1996.

In December 1995, I joined Newton Rigg College as Lecturer and Course Manager for the

BTec First and National Diploma Animal Care courses.

In September 1997 I also became the Course Leader for a new HND Animal Science course, run at Newton Rigg College, in association with the University of Central Lancashire.

My main teaching activities at Newton Rigg College included Animal Health and Welfare,

Animals in Society, Animal Husbandry (including basic behaviour, handling, housing, nutrition, breeding), Pet Shop Management, Animal Care, Anatomy and Physiology, Animal

Science Industry, Animal Welfare and Ethics.

I was also involved with organising work placements for the students on the courses and I acted as a personal tutor to many of these students .

The College has a wide variety of animals housed within the Small Animal Unit - rabbits, rodents, cats, dogs, insects, reptiles, amphibians, fish and birds. I worked closely with a

Technician/Instructor, but was ultimately responsible for the management of this Unit.

I achieved TDLB Unit D32 in September 1996 and TDLB Unit D33 in March 1997.

I successfully completed my Cert.Ed. (Post Compulsory) teaching qualification in June

1998.

I completed a Lifesaver Plus First Aid Course in 1998 and have attended a course covering

Basic Counselling Skills.

In 1998 I joined the PDSA working as a Veterinary Officer (part-time) in the busy Blackpool

Veterinary Centre. I handled a broad caseload of small animal medical and surgical patients and found this position to be invaluable in updating my own professional skills. I have continued to maintain my interest in education and regularly conducted guided tours of the

Centre for Girl Guides, Beavers, Rainbows and Animal Care students.

In April 2000 I was awarded RSA Computer Literacy and Information Technology Stage 1.

In May 2000 I was appointed RCVS External Verifier for Veterinary Nursing covering

Cumbria and Lancashire. This position included running training workshops, carrying out

ATAC approval and monitoring visits, providing advice and guidance to training centres and verifying student veterinary nurse portfolios.

I achieved the TDLB D35 external verifier award in March 2001.

I have two cats of my own.
