St Abban’s Athletic Club News 9th May 2012 Ailish Takes Crown Ailish Brennan made a welcome return to competition when she won the Leinster novice road championship in convincing fashion in Gowran on the Bank Holiday Monday. As an added bonus she led Laois to the team title. Colm Burke was 2nd overall in the masters men and won the O.45 section. Colm was joined by Colm McEvoy in securing the gold medals for Laois, while they were joined by Liam Byrne, David Osborne and Francis Fleming junior in the club section. Francis Fleming senior, Liam Delaney and Dinny Whelan scored for the club in the O.50 section taking the bronze medals. Mairead Moore and Ann Nicholl/Waugh ran impressively in the masters ladies after their exertions the previous day in the M3 Women’s 5k Mini Marathon. M3 Womens 5k Mini Marathon While the numbers were down on last year the new 5k course met with approval on Sunday when we had 133 finishers in the 5th Annual mini marathon. Special thanks to all who came out and supported the event, to the Gardai for looking after the traffic, our sponsors Laois Sports Partnership and Clonmore Meats, Killeshin and all the officials who helped out on the day. Thanks to Mary Whelan for driving the event. Margaret Danagher from Templemore in Tipperary was the winner while Teresa Agar was the first local home in 4th place, with Mairead Moore having a stormer in 6th, Teresa Brennan an excellent 9th, Kathleen O’Reilly 10th and Eileen Kelly 11th. Paula Guinan was in 15th place and the youthful Laura Graham 16th. Full results can be found on the club website. Sports Draws good numbers They came from far and near on Monday for the 17th Annual sports. A total of 30 clubs featured among the medals representing 12 counties. Despite the inclement weather and the couple of ‘haymaker’ showers a good atmosphere prevailed and with all the officials pulling out all the stops the programme was run off very efficiently. Congratulations to St. Laurence O’Toole, Carlow on taking the ‘Monavea Shield’ from the host club, with Portlaoise 3rd and Brow Rangers 4th. Busy time for Teresa Congratulations to Teresa Agar who had a very busy schedule over the past week recording victories in stage 2 of the Ballyroan/Abbeyleix League held in Ballyroan and stage 3 in Durrow, finishing 4th in the M3 Women’s Mini Marathon on Sunday and winning the Carers 10K in Kilkenny on Monday. All Roads Led to Luggacurren The 2012 Fit4Life League gets underway on Wednesday evening next the 16th May in Luggacurren at 7.30pm. It’s an ideal outlet over 8 stages from now until the 24th August with round 2 in Rossmore on the 30th May. All are welcome to join in and run, jog or walk to suit yourself. Registration takes place from 6.30pm in the hall in Luggacurren.
