THE HARLAKENDEN PEDIGREE BY CARROLL GAMBLE REVISED August 9, 2005 Over a century ago, a Mr. T. S. Mauldin of Greenville, S.C. prepared a family pedigree chart for Mabel Harlakenden, born September 27, 1614, died March 1, 1654. Mabel was born in Earl’s Colne, Essex England. She was the daughter of Elizabeth and Roger Harlakenden of the same place. In late July of 1635, a roster was made for approximately one-hundred passengers on the ship, “Defence” of London, Master, Edward Bostock. On the passenger roster were Roger Harlakenden, age 23, Mrs. Elizabeth Harlakenden, age 18 and Mabel Harlakeden, age 22. The three were from Earl’s Colne, Essex England and they arrived at Boston Harbor on October 8, 1635. This was the start of the Harlakenden Family in New England. The Harlakenden Family was an old established family in England and was directly connected to Edmund of Langley who was the first Duke of York. Duke Edmund of Langley was the fifth son of King Edward Plantagenet III and Queen Philippa and that established the right of ascension to the English Throne of Duke Edmund’s third son, Richard Plantagenet III. The Harlakenden Pedigree Chart and associated research data establishes the lineage of Harlakenden Family to King William Angevin I aka William the Conqueror (the supporting documentation is found in the “Whilden Family in the War Between the States with Genealogical Notes” by C .Michael Harrington, revised edition, summer 2003). Other supporting information was obtained from numerous Websites on the Internet by Carroll E. Gamble in June, 2005. The Harlakenden Pedgree Chart was generously provided to Carroll Gamble by Mr. Harrington and his generosity makes the compilation of this article possible. The history of the Kings and Queen of England and Scotland researched and written by C. Gamble establishes a connective link of the Whilden Family to Thrones of England and Scotland dating to King William I and King Malcolm III of Scotland. After arriving in Boston, Mabel Harlakenden married John Haynes the following year, 1636 and this appears to be a marriage of arrangement as John Haynes was born in Essex, England also. John Haynes was a prominent man in Connecticut politics as he served eight terms as Governor. Mabel Harlakenden was the second wife of John Haynes and they had six children, Ruth, John, Jr., Roger, Joseph, Mary and Mabel Haynes. The Harlakenden Pedigree Charts traces the origin of Mabel Harlakenden back to Duke Edmund Plantagent of Langley, the first Duke of York and Duchess Isabella. Edmund Plantagenet of Langley Married Isabella of Castille Born June 5, 1341 ? Born 1355 Died August 1, 1402 Died 1394 Edmund Plantagenet was the First Duke of York and was married twice, first to Isabella of Castille, daughter of King Peter “The Cruel” King of Castille (1333-1369)and Maria Padilla. His second wife was Joan de Holland. Joan de Holland and Duke Edmund did not have any children. MARGERY WILLOUGHBY AND LORD WILLIAM FITZHUGH Margery Willoughby Married William “Lord” Fitzhugh Born 1389 November 18,1406 Born 1398 Died 1452 Died October 22, 1452 Margery Willoughby and William “Lord” Fitzhugh are the key to establishing the link to William “the immigrant” Fitzhugh that confirms the Harlakenden Pedigree Chart authenticity. As stated above, T.S. Mauldin made the chart over 100 years ago. CHILDREN OF MARGERY WILLOUGHBY AND LORD WILLIAM FITZHUGH Baron Henry Fitzhugh Born 1424 Died June 8, 1472 Married ? Samuel Wyllys was one of the early settlers and founders of the Colony of Connecticut. He was one of the men who is listed in the Charter of Connecticut and the white oak tree in which the original Charter was secreted from Sir Edmond Andros in 1682 was on land owned by Samuel Wyllys. This tree is known as the Charter Oak and is depicted on the Commemorative Connecticut Quarter issued in 1999. In October, 1771, Samuel Wyllys was elected the First Captain of the First Company of the Governors Guard who were to act as the escorts of the elected Governor of Connecticut. This is the oldest military organization in continuous existence in the United States. Samuel Wyllys is listed in the Revolutionary War Units as Colonel Samuel Wyllys of the 22nd Connecticut Regiment. The Regiment fought in at least two Revolutionary War battles in New England under the command of Colonel Wyllys. PART II THE ROBERT EDWARD LEE CONNECTION In the Harlakenden Pedigree Chart are references to the Margery Willoughby (1389-1452) and William Lord Fitzhugh (1398-October 22, 1452) and the Harlakenden establishes the Whilden Family connection to King William I aka King William the Conqueror of England after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 AD. Another reference document entitled “William the Conqueror Through 15 Generations”establishes the linkage of the Fitzhugh Family in the genealogy of King William I as the Fitzhugh Family name is mentioned 264 times in a document that is 37 pages long. The name Fitz Hugh started with Bardolf of Brittany who was involved with King William in the invasion of England in 1066 A.D. and settled in England after the conquest. This statement is from an article entitled, “The Fitzhugh Family of Ravenworth” The custom of adopting a surname started in England in the 13th Century. In the year, 1304, Sir Henry Fitzhugh was born and is the progenitor of the Fitzhugh Family name as “fitz” means “son of”. Sir Henry Fitzhugh (1304-1356) was the son of Sir Hugh Fitz Henry (1257-March 12, 1304). The genealogy continues until 1398 A.D. when William Fitzhugh ( the William Fitzhugh mentioned in sentence one) was born from the marriage of Elizabeth Marmion aka Grey (1365December 14, 1427 and Sir Henry Fitz Hugh (1358- ?) thus confirming the Harlakenden Pedigree Chart data. This Fitzhugh Family is a very old English Family and they lived in Bedford Shire, England working in the legal profession through the fifteenth century. The family was very successful and owned substantial property holdings acquiring more into the sixteenth century through marriages. In the latter half of the sixteenth century the Fitzhugh Family divided into two branchs, one descended from Mary King ( ?-1698) and Henry Fitzhugh ( born 1614-died 1666). Henry Fitzhugh had a large family by two wives and after a financial set back he moved to Ireland and died there in 1666. Approximately 18 years after his father’s death William “the immigrant” migrated to the colony of Virginia and purchased 21, 996 acres of land from John Matthews in 1685 A.D. The land sold by John Matthews was surveyed by William Fitzhugh after acquisition and found to be 24,000 acres. Both men believed it to be 21, 996 acres. John Matthews owned an original Jamestown land grant. William (born 1651 died 1701) named the tract “Ravenswood” which was the largest parcel of land granted in Northern Virginia and he turned it from a wilderness into one of the largest tobacco plantations in Northern Virginia William Fitzhugh was a successful farmer but he also practiced as lawyer, acquired other property in the area, and acted as commander of the Stafford County militia. At the time of his death, he owned some 54,000 acres of land in Northern Virginia. When Colonel William H. Fitzhugh died in 1701, he bequeathed the Ravensworth Plantation to his two eldest sons, William Jr. and Henry. William Jr. inherited the southern portion of the estate and Henry got the northern portion. The northern portion included all of the land that is now Annandale, Virginia. The southern part is the part that establishes the link to Robert Edward Lee as Mary Randolph Custis Lee is the wife of General Robert E. Lee and the niece of William Fitzhugh III. She lived at Ravensworth after the war of northern aggression. This genealogy tracks the Fitzhugh Family in the Colony of Virginia shortly after the settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. The source document for the Fitzhugh Family is “A History of the Ancestors of Thomas L. Fitzhugh” by Thomas L. Fitzhugh, the fourth grandson of Thomas L. Fitzhugh and “Ancestors of Henry Fitzhugh and Robert Fitzhugh” obtained from Charleen Oerding. These are the “roadmaps” to the family as there are frequent uses of the same first names from generation to generation which creates problems of indentifying the people involved. The tracking starts when the Fitzhugh Family divided into the two branches when William “the immigrant” Fitzhugh migrated to the Virginia Colony and purchased 21,996 acres of land in northern Virginia. The descendants of Robert Fitzhugh ( born July 23, 1573-died August 7, 1647) and Anne Worsley remained in Bedfordshire England and his descendants are extant today in England. Henry Fitzhugh got the northern portion of the property which became Annandale, Virginia and William Fitzhugh Jr. received the southern acreage. The southern acreage passed to descendants and eventually became the property of the children of Mary Anne Randolph Custis Lee, the wife of General Robert Edward Lee. He owned over 300,000 acres of land, 1000 slaves and left his heirs 10,000 pounds cash when he died. Colonel Henry Fitzhugh married Lucy Carter thus connecting two of the most important families in Virginia. Henry Fitzhugh Born 1706 Died 1742 Married ? Martha Washington’s maiden name was Dandridge. Martha Dandridge was born June 2, 1731 to John Custis (1700-1756) and Francis Dandridge Jones (1710-1785). Her marriage to George Washington on January 6, 1759 was her second marriage. Martha and George Washington did not have any children but they adopted Eleanor and George Washington Parke Custis. Martha Custis Washington died May 22, 1802. Mary Lee Fitzhugh and George Custis had three children but Mary Anne Randolph Custis was the only one who survived to adulthood. His father was Henry “Light Horse Harry Lee” ( January 29, 1756-March 25, 1818) who served with great valor under General George Washington in the American War of Independence. In 1778, he was promoted to Major and given command of a small irregular corps and he led it with a great sense of leadership and acumen. His greatest exploit was at the Battle of Paulus Hook, New Jersey on August 19, 1779. He was awarded a gold medal for this exploit and it is the only such medal given to an officer of rank lower than general in the war. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1780 and sent with a picked corp. of dragoons to the southern theatre and fought at the battles of Guilford Courthouse, Camden, and Eutaw Springs. He was present at Yorktown at the surrender of British General Cornwallis. Henry Lee left the army afterward because of ill health and in February, 1782, he married his second cousin’s daughter, Matlilda. She bore three children and died in 1790. On June 13, 1793, Henry married Anne Hill Carter ( October, 1773-July 26, 1829) , daughter of Charles Carter of the Carter Family of Virginia. The couple had six children.
