COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Provides hands-on experience in performing noninvasive cardiovascular procedures with emphasis on instrumentation and development of clinical techniques. Topics include: policies and procedures, echocardiographic instrumentation, recording patient information, patient preparation, and performing echocardiographic examinations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES :

1.

Policies and Procedures

a.

Follows all policies and procedures of the cardiovascular lab.

b.

Maintain professionalism, proper hygiene, and appropriate attire in a clinical setting

.

2.

Echocardiographic Instrumentation a. Prepare the room with proper equipment and supplies according to the specific exam to be performed. b. Manipulate equipment instrumentation for optimal imaging. c. Operate electrocardiographic equipment.

3.

Recording Patient Information a. Obtain and assemble pertinent information from the patient or the patient’s chart and present the information to the interpreting physician for a complete diagnostic study. b. Understand importance and perform a physical verification of the patient through the patient ID bracelet. c. Understand importance and perform a physical verification of the written order.

d. Accurately document measurements and technical components on patient worksheet, preliminary report, and/or chart according to the facility and the ASE guidelines. e. Assist with the preparation of the report generated after the completion of the examination.

Patient Preparation a. Observe universal precautions.

b. Prepare patient through a basic explanation of the exam to be performed and appropriate patient consent prior to exam.

c. Comply with all patient preparation procedures for testing performed in a non-invasive cardiovascular lab according to the department’s policy and procedure guidelines.

Performing Echocardiographic Examinations a. Demonstrate the parasternal long axis view of the 2-D echocardiogram and identify the corresponding tomographic anatomy.

b. Demonstrate the parasternal short axis view, at the papillary muscle, mitral valve, and aortic valve levels of the

2-D echocardiogram and identify the corresponding tomographic anatomy.

c. Demonstrate the apical two, three, four, and five chamber views of the 2-D echocardiogram.

d. Identify and evaluate the valvular anatomy, chamber size and function, and hemodynamic blood flow throughout the cardiac cycle.

e. Demonstrate the apical four chamber and the left ventricular short axis level in the subcostal view of the 2-D echocardiogram.

f. Demonstrate the long and short axis of the aorta in the suprasternal notch of the 2-D echocardiogram.

g. Identify and evaluate pericardium and the inferior vena cava and its respiratory variation.

h. Identify and evaluate the great vessels and the hemodynamic flow within the vessels.

ECH 131, ECH 136, DMS 202, ECH 133

CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Clinical education is arranged by the Echocardiography Program faculty, in conjunction with the clinical affiliates. While the student is in the clinical department, he/she must observe the regulations imposed by that facility with regards to patient safety and welfare.

Students are expected to be present and on time for all clinical assignments. Any absences from the clinical area will affect the students’ clinical educatio n as well as affect the students’ grades. Absences from clinical area will result in make-up time. This make-up time is scheduled at the discretion of the ECHO instructor and the clinical facility.

In the case of illness or other emergency, the student MUST personally notify

OTC Echo faculty and the Clinical Site Instructor prior the scheduled clinical period. Failure to notify appropriate personnel will result in an unexcused absence.

The student WILL be dropped for absence greater than 10%. In this course, one day is 10%; any missed time exceeding this 10% will result in the student being dropped from the course. THERE IS NO ATTENDANCE APPEAL

PROCEDURE!

While performing clinical duties, the student will be directly responsible to personnel assigned to the Echo student. If any operational or personal problems arise, this person or OTC faculty should be contacted.

Attendance in the Clinical Area Requires:

1. Clean, pressed uniform: white scrub top with program patches in place, white pants, white crew socks, white leather shoes (see clinical manual)

2. Official Ogeechee Technical College nametag

3. Any other identification required by Clinical Affiliate

4. Watch with second hand

5. Clinical notebook with Clinical Manual

6. A GOOD ATTITUDE AND SMILE

Academic Policies:

“The term

"cheating" includes, but is not limited to: (1) use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; (2) dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or carrying out other assignments; (3) the acquisition, without permission, of tests or other academic material belonging to a member of the Technical College faculty or

It also includes the unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials.”“Academic misconduct is any act that does or could improperly distort students’ grades or other student academic records. A student enrolls at Ogeechee Technical College to gain technical skills to lead to greater employability. Academic misconduct is not only “cheating” the student of learning the needed skills; it is an offense to the academic integrity of the learning environment. All forms of academic dishonesty will call for discipline.” A student dismissed for cheating or plagiarism will not be eligible for re-entry.

IF THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF CLINICAL COMPETENCIES IS NOT

COMPLETED BY THE TERM DEADLINE, A GRADE OF ZERO (0) WILL BE

GIVEN FOR EACH INCOMPLETE EXAMINATION. FAILURE TO COMPLETE

REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS MAY RESULT IN PROBATION, SUSPENSION,

OR DISMASSAL FROM PROGRAM.
