Summer Events 2015 Saturday 13 7:30pm Concert by Truro Choral Society: ‘A Child of Our Time’ Sir Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time premiered in London in 1944. Written as a response to the social injustices caused by the Depression and the horrors that had been unfolding around the world following the rise of Nazism, its anti-war message is, of course, as relevant now as it was then. To perform this emotionally powerful work, Truro Choral Society will be joined by four superb soloists from the Royal Academy of Music and the excellent Truro Symphony Orchestra. The choir will also sing Rachmaninov's moving Bogoroditse Devo, conducted by James Orford, and the pianist Paul Comeau will play Rachmaninov's sublime Piano Concerto No 2 on the Cathedral's new concert grand piano. The first half includes intense works by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, the great English composer John Tavener who died in November 2013, and Cornishman Russell Pascoe. The second half is the sublime Requiem by Maurice Duruflé. This premiere performance of The Online Orchestra will connect three venues around Cornwall: Five Islands School on the Isles of Scilly; Mullion School on the Lizard peninsula; and Truro Cathedral. The Cathedral will house a string group and a female vocal group, a brass section will be in Mullion, and a flute section will play from the Scilly Isles. The Online Orchestra is a research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) that asks how we can use the internet to give children and amateur musicians who live in remote communities around the country the same opportunities to play in an orchestra as those who live in larger towns and cities. A prizewinning student at the Royal College of Music, John held positions at Westminster Abbey and Lincoln Cathedral before coming to Truro Cathedral as Acting Assistant Organist in 2000. Exhibition by Johanna Freudenberg: ‘Visions and Vistas’ – This series of works on paper, using collage, oil crayons and oil paint, depicts the lives of 24 Cornish Saints. Between primarily the 4th and 6th centuries, these men and women left Wales and Ireland and migrated southwards to convert the pagan population of Cornwall to Christianity. Wandering the dramatic costal paths and inland, they left their names to scores of villages, hamlets, churches and wells, and contributed to the shaping of Cornwall’s landscape and history. Johanna Freudenberg was born in New York, moved to London to study sculpture at St Martin’s School of Art, and has since lived and worked in Hampstead and then Kilburn as a painter, garden designer and art teacher. Organ Concert by Robert Sharpe Robert Sharpe was Organist and Director of Music at Truro Cathedral from 2002-2008. In 2008, his achievements were recognised by the Cornish Gorsedd which awarded him the Cornwhylen Cross for an “outstanding contribution to Church Music”. He is currently Director of Music at York Minster where his work centres around the daily choral tradition and the two treble lines, one of boys the other of girls, both of which he directs, and the famous Minster organ. His programme for the concert includes: Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, Bach; Evening Song, Bairstow; Choral III, Franck; Adante Sostenuto, Widor; Toccata, Choral and Fugue, Jackson; Berceuse a la memoire de Vierne, Cochereau; Carillon de Westminster, Vierne.
