Woodall kbuckner@uplifteducation.org Course Description: Physical Education MYP - Year 4 The Physical Education MYP Year 3 course allows scholars to develop a plan for a physically active lifestyle that can be utilized throughout their adolescent and adult life. The wellness activities are based on student enjoyment but are designed to be both mentally and physically stimulating. Scholars participate in sports such as volleyball, football, bowling, and basketball. The scholars will successfully experience the benefits of physical activity and fitness conditioning; assess their own level of physical fitness and progress in the course by way of core exercises at the commencement of each class. There is also an emphasis in the course on health awareness, with areas such as nutrition, hygiene, drugs and peer interaction being the major focus. Scholars will also engage in team sports play with an emphasis on teamwork along with the rules and regulations of the games. Roles of Areas of Interaction: Human Ingenuity: Scholars will explore the aspects of the sports world while expressing their creativity through language, movement and style individuality. Approaches to Learning: Through various fitness and sports activities scholars will demonstrate all required objectives. Community Service: Through discussions scholars will reflect upon their role in their sports/fitness community. Health and Social: Through the exploration of various sports scholars will become aware of social issues such as gender equality, teamwork and both their physical and mental health. Environments: Scholars will examine their environments and how they affect our physical/mental health as well as raise their physical, social and cultural awareness. Middle School Classroom procedures: All scholars will have 3 minutes after the allotted passing period to be fully dressed, and walking around the gym. Middle School scholars will change in the primary bathrooms and high school scholars will change in the bathrooms within the school. A scholar will know if they are tardy when they are not in their assigned seats before the basketball buzzer sounds. If a scholar is tardy they will need to do the following: 1st Offense: Core work for every one minute they are late. 2nd Offense: Core work for required time points off their daily grade. If a scholar has an excuse and is unable to participate in PE, they are to sit in the bleachers with an assigned “sideline sheet”. o Any scholar who misses P.E. because of a parent excuse will need to meet with their coach to discuss making up this absence. If a scholar sits out for more than two days, they must present a doctors excuse the next class meeting. This excuse will be kept on file in the P.E. department as well as with the nurse. Any high school scholar who is unable to participate for longer than two weeks will need to drop the class and take it another semester, at the teachers’ discretion. Scholars are REQUIRED to dress out for P.E. classes. o Proper North Hills Physical Education Clothes o Correct shoes (preferably running shoes…NO BLACK SOLE SHOES!!) o Girls must have hair pulled off shoulders. o No Jewelry is allowed with the exception of watches, when running. Girls may wear stud earrings but they must bring their own Band-Aid’s to cover them up. They must be covered at all times. o Water Bottle-Gatorade and other sports drinks are not allowed in the gym. Scholars must put their names on all belongings! The following constitutes points being deducted from the scholars grade: o Not wearing North Hills P.E. dept. uniform/shoes o Wearing Jewelry o Chewing gum o Hair not pulled back (Teacher discretion) o NO Electronics are allowed in the gym this includes IPods, PSP’s and Gameboy DS. All Electronics will be confiscated and given to the appropriate Dean. If a scholar is not dressed, they are still REQUIRED to workout in their school uniform. If a child is participating in their school uniform they will not be required to attend a tutorial time. If they are not participating they will need to schedule a time with their specific coach. Scholars will start their PE time with various stretches, core work and cardiovascular training. End of class: Scholars will have 10 minutes to dress out for the next class, notes will not be written for tardiness to another class. Consequences for missed Tutorials: o Parent Email/Phone Call o Daily grade deductions Grading Procedures: All scholars in middle and upper school PE will be graded on the following scales: 60% Participation 30% Monthly Wellness Evaluation 10% Skills Testing/Quizzes The North Hills School P.E.
