Lesson 2: weather forecast Aim Pupils use the information gained in lesson 1: weather researcher to present a Power Point presentation of their own weather forecast. Learning outcomes 1) Pupils are able to reinforce their basic knowledge of locations of major settlements. 2) Pupils can understand and compare differences in the weather between various locations. 3) Pupils can improve the their communication skills. Materials provided Outline map of Wales, UK and the World. Basic weather symbols. Pupil instructions on how to present the weather. Teacher notes The pupils present a Power Point presentation; they are provided with the maps, and instructions. The pupils are placed into groups of three or four depending on the size of the class. The presentation requires the pupils to use the information gained in lesson 1: weather researcher to complete the weather forecast. The presentation must have an introduction, at least three days of forecast for the chosen map (Wales, UK or the world) and a summary. The groups complete their presentation, with each person participating in the presentation when they report back to the class. A hard copy is then printed off to be included in their exercise books. Links to whiteboard Power Point presentation presented to the whole class via an interactive whiteboard. Teacher example could be produced as an exemplar including; Introduction (what is the presentation about, area, location etc); the three days covered (maps showing different weather types) and conclusion (a summary of the weather over the three days). Own experience The pupils have to be carefully selected; emphasis must be placed on communication skills of the whole group. Taught in year 8, the mixed ability classes worked well with mixed groups pre-selected by the teacher. The reporting back to the whole class was a major success and was a major incentive for the pupils to complete the presentation.
