Brief Course Description
This course will observe and examine the development of Hip Hop as a cultural movement, which includes
Hip Hop music, dance, graffiti art, and clothing styles. Students will examine key figures in Hip Hop, institutions, and social settings through readings, electronic media, videos, and hands-on projects.
Students will also examine how Hip Hop culture is not only a source of entertainment, but also a medium that analyzes and/or provides commentary regarding social, economic, political and cultural issues dealing with cultural identity, cultural genocide, misogyny, racism, classism, materialism, freedom of speech and freedom of sexuality.

Intended Outcome
1. Students will be able to critically engage lyrics/messages encoded within Hip Hop recordings and images
Assessment Method
During the final examination students will be asked to analyze and contextualize lyrics and images within Hip Hop culture.
Also, the students will be required to situate the lyrics and images within the political climate of the period of the songs and images creation.
Students will be asked embedded questions on exam.
2. Students will exhibit knowledge of the four elements of Hip Hop and explain the connection to the tradition of Black Arts.
Assessment Criteria
At least 75% of the students score above 70%
At least 75% of the students should score 4 out of 4 on the exam pertaining to identifying the four elements of Hip Hop.
