Syllabus in Listening Comprehension The Listening course will consist of three different parts namely A, B & C. The short conversations and dialogues in Part A and B make up the introductory material meant to bridge the gap between what secondary school students used to be exposed to,(i.e. very little exposure to authentic Listening) and the complex language in the long lectures of Contemporary Topics. In addition, the students will work on a variety of material (A: short dialogues B: longer conversations) instead of having the same pattern of long lectures all through the semester. Week 1 Part A Listening to short dialogues Lesson I Dialogues with sound confusion. Objective: Using the context to identify homonyms and minimal pairs. Lesson II Dialogues with idioms Objective: To familiarize students with the most commonly used idiomatic expressions. (Provide students with list of idioms) Lesson III Answering inference questions about dialogues Objective: Training students in the skill of inferencing, understanding information that is not directly stated in the dialogue. Lesson IV Dialogues involving agreement and disagreement. -Suggestions -Invitations -Offers/Requests -Contradictions -Assumptions Objective: Understanding the language of Agreeing/Disagreeing/Suggesting/Offering Week 2 Lesson V Conversations about topics/plans and problems. Lesson VI Dialogues with special verbs (causative verbs) (used to ) plus practice test. Practice Test Lesson VII Listening to telephone messages Objective: To be able to understand telephone messages and take notes. Listening to moving instructions Objective: To be able to understand and follow instructions. Part B Longer conversations Week 3 1. Six mini lectures Objective: Training students to get the main topic. Lesson VIII Mini lectures 1, 2 and 3 Lesson IX 2. Mini lecture 4, 5 and 6 Objective : Training students in the skill of Predicting ( from the lecture students have to predict what the rest of the talk will be) Three longer conversations Objective: Listening for specific details Week 4 Lesson X Conversation: 1, 2 and 3 Objective: Matching and ordering items Week 5 Practice for short and longer conversations Week 6 In Term Part C Contemporary topics. Listening to longer lectures.
