APPLICATION FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE
FORD PARADE OF HISTORIC SHIPS
Background
In recognition of the importance of Detroit’s nautical history to the development and continued
growth of the region, two major maritime events have been planned as part of the Detroit 300
Festival. Thursday through Saturday, July 19-21, the spectacular Tall Ships®, coast guard
cutters and other vessels participating in Sail DetroitSM will be docked along both sides of the
Detroit River and open for public tours. Sail DetroitSM is an official race port of Tall Ships®
Challenge™ Great Lakes 2001, organized by the American Sail Training Association. The
public will have the opportunity to board these historic vessels and meet the captains and crew.
On Sunday, July 22, the Tall Ships of Sail DetroitSM will join a wide range of other maritime
vessels representing the full 300-year history of the Detroit River in the Ford Parade of Historic
Ships. From canoes and oared ships to steamships, merchant sailing ships, riverboats, tugs and
more, this historic review of Detroit’s nautical roots will sail the river in an unprecedented
maritime display.
Critera for Participation
Detroit 300 is inviting owners and/or operators of historically significant boats, ships and other
vessels to submit an application for participation in the Ford Parade of Historic Ships.
Participating vessels must be relevant to the history of the Great Lakes, Detroit River, the City of
Detroit or the City of Windsor. Examples include boats important in the automotive industry or
