Alfred Wegener Institute Foundation for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) Member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres The section Marine Biogeosciences invites applications for a PhD Position on metabolism and biomineralization in phytoplankton. The position will be for three years starting in Fall-Winter 2006. Funding is made available by the DFG (German science foundation) through the project: 'Calcification of selected coccolithophore species: metabolic state and trace metal partitioning' which investigates the impact of ambient carbonate chemistry and cellular metabolism on trace metal:Ca ratio in coccolith calcite. The project aims to evaluate whether metal:Ca ratios in coccolithophores represent robust proxies for paleo-oceanographic studies. We seek a skilled cell biologist or biochemist to investigate the metabolic network in calcification of coccolithophores, and to study activities of the enzymes involved in carbon and nitrogen acquisition. Very good knowledge of biochemical and cell biological tools and interest in in vivo cell imaging are essential. Additional knowledge in plant physiology or oceanography would be welcome. A diploma or equivalent degree in biology or biochemistry is required at the time of appointment. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with the section Marine Biotechnology and the HGF-Young Investigators Group 'Global change and the future marine carbon cycle' at the AWI. A strong dedication to the interdisciplinary project and the ability for independent work are prerequisites for a successful application. The AWI is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. Women, minorities and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. For further information on application and admission requirements please contact the AWI Personal Departement at the below-mentioned address.
