Certification of
School:
Sheridan is an Ontario Public College and is certified to issue T2202A tax
receipts.
Sheridan recognizes that some students who enter a program at the College will
have earned postsecondary credits at other recognized postsecondary institutions
and may wish to apply these credits towards the Sheridan credential. Advanced
standing refers to the transferring of credit earned at another recognized postsecondary institution towards a Sheridan credential.
Students may apply to receive advanced standing for specific Sheridan course(s)
based on the successful completion of similar courses at other recognized
postsecondary institutions subject to meeting applicable Sheridan policies.
Advanced
Standing:
Candidates must have achieved a minimum course grade of C grade in the
course that is being considered for advanced standing, or the minimum pass for
the course for promotion within the program, whichever is higher.
Courses considered for advanced standing must have been completed within five
years prior to the request except with the permission of the Dean of the respective
school.
Please refer to the full Advanced Standing policy on Sheridan’s Policies and
Procedures website for specific details.

management software will be introduced.
COURSE
Architectural Studio 1
Code:
ARCH 12356
Hours / wk: 6
The purpose of this course is to develop basic freehand architectural sketching skills
and to introduce the student to residential dwellings and construction. Freehand
drawing is a technique for three-dimensional thinking, problem solving and is a
method for visualising ideas. Quality sketches are used as presentations and as a
support for CAD drafting. Within a studio setting, the student will learn basic
architectural drawing conventions and techniques. Through the practice of exercises

the opportunity to elevate their freehand drawing skills to a professional standard.
COURSE
Building Materials 1
Code:
TECH 16214
Hours / wk: 3
The course examines the methods and materials used in the construction of
residential buildings. There are two primary areas of study: (1) The application and
use of the various materials employed in architectural building systems: foundations,
wood framing, building envelope, doors, windows, thermal and moisture protection
components. Issues include strength, durability, availability, ease of construction,
aesthetics and Ontario Building Code considerations. (2) Residential detailing
conventions and techniques utilizing freehand sketching and incorporating industry
standards.

and appreciation for the evolution of architecture from its Stone Age origins through
Modernism. It includes an examination of the relationship of architecture and culture
and the meaning of built form. Specifically, this includes an investigation of the
definition of architecture as; the art of making place for ritual and the meaning
brought to the definition by each of the words. Expansion of architectural vocabulary
and the appreciation of historic reference in contemporary styles will be supported by
an investigation of specific examples in the historical development as well as local
residential design. Interactive lecture periods will explore the development in a
chronological manner, through an examination of important examples of architecture
and urban design dating from each period. Lab periods will be directed at the
evolution of architectural form within the Canadian context.
COURSE

production of a set of working drawings using both CAD and freehand drafting
techniques. Students will be given a design problem which they will solve graphically
and then they will produce design sketches, presentation drawings and a working
model to explain and communicate their ideas. They will then analyze their design
with respect to the relevant building codes to select and design the structural and
building envelope systems, detail the foundation, wall and roof assemblies, as well as
produce a representative set of architectural working drawings.
COURSE
Architectural Detailing – Residential
Code:
ARCH 17991
Hours / wk: 2
Students will be introduced to the general principles of architectural detailing
through the study of typical residential details with emphasis on the exterior building
envelope. This course will help develop an understanding of technical building
detailing and construction practices as they relate to residential buildings. Interrelation of freehand drawn details and actual site-built construction will be studied.
Students will learn which parts of a house need to be detailed, how these details
relate to the overall building aesthetic and how to develop a detail from a design
concept drawing.
COURSE
Calculus
Code:
CALC 14998
Hours / wk: 3
This introductory calculus course relates directly to the requirements for the
architectural designation. Beginning with a review of functions, the student will study
differential and integral calculus. Tangents, limits and rules of differentiation for
polynomial and trigonometric equations will be studied. The rules of antiderivatives
will be studied. Emphasis will be placed on the application of derivatives to problems
such as related rates, optimization, understanding curves and marginal costs.
Applications of integration will include the area under a curve such as a shear stress
diagram.
COURSE
Residential Estimating
Code:
TECH 14173
Hours / wk: 3
This course is an introduction to quantity surveying and estimating. The students will
be introduced to proper measurement of construction items and components found
in a residential project. Emphasis is placed on accuracy of measurement, correct
description of items, logical sequence of quantity take-off and presentation. Both
metric and imperial measures and conversions are discussed. A complete estimate of
a house will be done.

This course focuses upon the use of the computer to create and display 3dimensional models of architectural projects. Different modelling techniques are
explored including wireframe modelling, surface modelling and solid modelling using
AutoCAD. Basic rendering will be introduced.

ARCH 30043
Hours / wk: 6
Architectural Technician – (PATCN)
Ontario College Diploma – Two Year Program
Program Profile for Second Career
September 2013 start
This course applies the CAD and freehand skills developed in earlier drafting courses
to the creation of solutions for commercial projects. Students will develop solutions
to site planning problems, including pedestrian and vehicle access, parking,
landscaping and grading in accordance with Ontario Building Code and municipal
zoning bylaw regulations, and create drawings suitable for inclusion in a site plan
control application. Also, students will study design drawings for a specific project
and take these drawings to the contract documents stage. This will include
modifications to the design to achieve Ontario Building Code conformance, a study
and integration of structural, mechanical and electrical engineering consultant
drawings, selection of appropriate building assemblies and development of contract
drawings. Students will work in groups and apply teaming strategies to produce fully
coordinated drawing sets. Students will apply construction technology knowledge
from pre-requisite courses and further develop this knowledge in an application
setting. As well, technical skills introduced in previous courses will be reinforced and
developed, including; CAD drafting, freehand drawing, word processing, and
spreadsheets.
COURSE
Architectural Detailing: Commercial
Code:
ARCH 21158
Hours / wk: 3
This course will further develop a student's knowledge and understanding of
technical building detailing practices. It will build upon freehand drawing skills
already gained in other courses. Though the focus of the course emphasizes exterior
envelope detailing, some interior details will be included in this study. The general
process of selecting and producing professional quality freehand details will be
reviewed with attention to the differences between residential and commercial
details. The interrelationship between a drawn detail and the actual site execution
and the overall building aesthetic will be studied.
COURSE
Strength of Materials
Code:
ENGI 28982
Hours / wk: 3
Students learn the theory of the Strength of Materials and study the procedure to
compute stresses in structural members due to applied loads. Students explore
common construction materials and their section properties to design axial and
flexural members. Students explore and use computer software to analyze and
design members for a simple 2-D frame in preparation for structural design in
Semester 5.

TECH 20129
Hours / wk: 3
Architectural Technician – (PATCN)
Ontario College Diploma – Two Year Program
Program Profile for Second Career
September 2013 start
The nature of this course is to focus on the written component of construction
documents and their relationship to the drawing component. Contractual
responsibilities and obligations will be explored. Practical experience will be gained in
the interpretation of construction documents including specifications.
COURSE
Project Management 2
Code: MGMT 20025
Hours / wk: 3
Students build on the strategies, concepts, and principles that were presented in the Project
Management 1 course. Students learn to focus on the role of a project manager regarding the
application and administration of effective project planning, scheduling, analyzing, and controlling
for a small commercial project. The strategies and applications presented in this course can be
applied to an architectural or an engineering project. Students achieve an understanding of the
role of a project manager from the development of a conceptual budget to the completion of a
“Master Plan” for the project. Students gain an understanding of project management software
(MS Project) to develop a construction schedule and a master schedule for a small project.
