COURSE Architectural History Code: HIST 12797 Hours / wk: 3 This course provides students with opportunities to increase their understanding of and appreciation for the evolution of architecture from its Stone Age origins through Modernism. It includes an examination of the relationship of architecture and culture and the meaning of built form. Specifically, this includes an investigation of the definition of architecture as; the art of making place for ritual and the meaning brought to the definition by each of the words. Expansion of architectural vocabulary and the appreciation of historic reference in contemporary styles will be supported by an investigation of specific examples in the historical development as well as local residential design. Interactive lecture periods will explore the development in a chronological manner, through an examination of important examples of architecture and urban design dating from each period. Beginning with a review of functions, the student will study differential and integral calculus. Tangents, limits and rules of differentiation for polynomial and trigonometric equations will be studied. The rules of antiderivatives will be studied. Emphasis will be placed on the application of derivatives to problems such as related rates, optimization, understanding curves and marginal costs. The students will be introduced to proper measurement of construction items and components found in a residential project. Human comfort needs are examined as well as the principles of heat transfer, moisture control, and ventilation. The course is designed to give the student the required skills to produce the calculations and documents required to get a building permit for a residence or residential addition, as well as an understanding of the theoretical basis of these calculations. COURSE Architectural Studio 3 Code: ARCH 29969 Hours / wk: 5 Students will prepare construction documents from design drawings with particular attention towards commercial architectural building systems. Strategies for dealing with issues of co-ordination as a member of a team will be applied. Freehand sketching and CAD techniques will be integrated into the process. The class will be divided into production teams. Each team will be responsible for the production of a co-ordinated, representational set of working drawings as a final project. The emphasis of this final project will be on high quality graphics and sound detailing within a fully co-ordinated set of drawings. Students consider real structures for analysis and calculate the reactive forces due to external loads. Students learn to analyze two dimensional trusses using two different methods; manual and computerized. COURSE Cross College General Education Code: ELECTIVE COURSE Project Management 1 Code: MGMT 14998 Hours / wk: 3 Hours / wk: 3 Students are introduced to the concept of project management and experience effective strategies for project administrating, and analyzing a small commercial construction project. Students achieve an understanding of the participants (owner, designer, and contractor) involved in a project as well as the different methods (general contracting, design build, construction management and project management) of delivering a commercial project. Students will experience hands-on project administration applications (tendering, contracts, shop drawings process, change order process, job cost reporting and progress claims) that can be applied to an architectural or an engineering project. COURSE 3D Computer Modelling Code: CADD 28780 Hours / wk: 2 This course focuses upon the use of the computer to create and display 3dimensional models of architectural projects. Different modelling techniques are explored including wireframe modelling, surface modelling and solid modelling using AutoCAD. Basic rendering will be introduced. COURSE Architectural Studio 4 Code: Page 16 of 18 ARCH 30043 Hours / wk: 6 Architectural Technician – (PATCN) Ontario College Diploma – Two Year Program Program Profile for Second Career September 2013 start This course applies the CAD and freehand skills developed in earlier drafting courses to the creation of solutions for commercial projects. Students will develop solutions to site planning problems, including pedestrian and vehicle access, parking, landscaping and grading in accordance with Ontario Building Code and municipal zoning bylaw regulations, and create drawings suitable for inclusion in a site plan control application. Also, students will study design drawings for a specific project and take these drawings to the contract documents stage. This will include modifications to the design to achieve Ontario Building Code conformance, a study and integration of structural, mechanical and electrical engineering consultant drawings, selection of appropriate building assemblies and development of contract drawings. Students will work in groups and apply teaming strategies to produce fully coordinated drawing sets. Students will apply construction technology knowledge from pre-requisite courses and further develop this knowledge in an application setting. As well, technical skills introduced in previous courses will be reinforced and developed, including; CAD drafting, freehand drawing, word processing, and spreadsheets. COURSE Architectural Detailing: Commercial Code: ARCH 21158 Hours / wk: 3 This course will further develop a student's knowledge and understanding of technical building detailing practices. It will build upon freehand drawing skills already gained in other courses. Though the focus of the course emphasizes exterior envelope detailing, some interior details will be included in this study. The general process of selecting and producing professional quality freehand details will be reviewed with attention to the differences between residential and commercial details. The interrelationship between a drawn detail and the actual site execution and the overall building aesthetic will be studied. COURSE Strength of Materials Code: ENGI 28982 Hours / wk: 3 Students learn the theory of the Strength of Materials and study the procedure to compute stresses in structural members due to applied loads. Students explore common construction materials and their section properties to design axial and flexural members. Students explore and use computer software to analyze and design members for a simple 2-D frame in preparation for structural design in Semester 5. COURSE Specifications and Contracts Code: Page 17 of 18 TECH 20129 Hours / wk: 3 Architectural Technician – (PATCN) Ontario College Diploma – Two Year Program Program Profile for Second Career September 2013 start The nature of this course is to focus on the written component of construction documents and their relationship to the drawing component. Contractual responsibilities and obligations will be explored. Practical experience will be gained in the interpretation of construction documents including specifications. COURSE Project Management 2 Code: MGMT 20025 Hours / wk: 3 Students build on the strategies, concepts, and principles that were presented in the Project Management 1 course. Students learn to focus on the role of a project manager regarding the application and administration of effective project planning, scheduling, analyzing, and controlling for a small commercial project. The strategies and applications presented in this course can be applied to an architectural or an engineering project. Students achieve an understanding of the role of a project manager from the development of a conceptual budget to the completion of a “Master Plan” for the project. Students gain an understanding of project management software (MS Project) to develop a construction schedule and a master schedule for a small project.
