St. Mark’s Message The Second Sunday in Lent March 1, 2015 THE LION’S PAUSE REFLECTIONS OF ALLISON PENICK, Vestry Clerk I awoke this morning to a wonderland of white—clouds of snowflakes drifting over icy footprints on the sidewalks and tire marks on the roads. That makes it sound pretty. I was grumpy inside. My mind felt frozen. I didn’t want to risk going to church which would have helped me hit my re-set button. I read the paper instead. Now I felt very gloomy. ISIS terrorists striking everywhere. A murder trial for a former football hero. Corruption trials for political figures at all levels of government. Funerals for victims of yet another Metro-North train crash. A measles outbreak. I searched for good news. The U.S. economy is slowly improving, but that doesn’t explain why my food bill is still high. Oh, wait. The UCONN men and women basketball teams both won on Saturday. I smile once. Where do I as an Episcopalian fit in this world? Last week I received a notice from the Episcopal Public Policy Network asking me to e-mail my legislators to encourage them to pass immigration bills in Congress. I did so. St. Mark’s Thursday group has looked at several Church Next courses focusing on the Common Good. It seems to be a simple idea. St. Mark’s mission is “Open to God’s Love Serving Our Neighbor”. Jesus asks us to love each other as ourselves. The Common Good should be the result. A comment on one of the course’s discussion questions really touched me. “Love is deeper than justice. When justice and mercy meet, that is truly divine.” Only God can reach that goal. Not mere punishment for wrongs but rehabilitation, reconciliation and forgiveness. As an Episcopalian, I must strive to follow Jesus. I must love, forgive, and work toward the common good in our community. A letter, a poem, a friendly “hello”, a donation to the food pantry…. Love and peace to all, Allison Penick XCI, No. 08 Adult Forum – Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Auditorium March 1st – Some thoughts on Islamic fundamentalism and its origins. Fr. Pace offers a look at the origins of contemporary Islamic fundamentalism and political Islam. Islamic fundamentalism is one of the greatest challenges before today’s world. It is important to know something of its origins and how it is nourished and fed. Due to the weather the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church 2nd Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Feast WAS CANCELLED this year.
