Assumption Catholic School Summer Reading List Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten: For students entering Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, there is no required number of books to read over the summer break; however, it is recommended that you read to your child often and make reading time an enjoyable experience. Although children develop at different rates: Common literacy characteristics of 3- and 4-year olds include: Love being read to Enjoy language, delighting in big words and long explanations Common literacy characteristics of 5- and 6-year olds include: Imaginative and believe toys and other objects are “alive” Think very literally (“raining cats and dogs” means cats and dogs are falling from the sky) Read one word at a time (5-year old) Eyes are maturing, so reading becomes easier (6-year old) Beginning to understand past and present, and how and why things happen More able to see other viewpoints and understand reasons for rules (6-year old) Love new ideas and asking questions As a service to our families we offer a suggested summer reading list. This list is by no means exhaustive. The selections come from various sources and appeal to various tastes. In addition to this list, we suggest that you visit the public library and browse the stacks in the children’s section. Reading should be fun, so if a student picks a book, reads part, and decides he does not like it, allow him to pick another. There are thousands to choose from.
