Application for Maryland Biotechnology Center
Translational Research Awards
Purpose: Maryland is globally recognized as one of the largest clusters of research intensity in the life
sciences across its academic, federal and industry sectors. The Maryland Biotechnology Center seeks to
catalyze the “translation” of this early stage bioscience research into commercially viable products or
services. Identification of research that lends itself to commercial applicability and providing critical
“proof of concept” funding is critical to this effort. Also critical is leveraging discoveries across sectors
and disciplines in a collaborative environment. This award program favors projects that involve
interactions between the State’s academic research programs and those in private companies that
provide a clear path to move promising research on a viable commercialization path.
The Award: The award minimum may not exceed $200,000 per awardee per annual award cycle. Funds
will be released in project phases tied to successful completion of identified milestones. Companies
must apply 100% of project costs financed by the award to direct costs for tasks associated with the
milestones. The project should be able to achieve all indicated milestones within one year. The award is
a repayable grant. Repayment obligation initiates following completion of the funded project, at 3% of
company revenue (excluding grants and awards) capped at 40% of the award per year not to exceed 2x
the award amount. University-only awards are repaid at a rate of 25% of royalty revenue not to exceed
2x the award amount.
Who can apply: Applications may be submitted by principal investigators from either private bioscience
companies or from research universities located in Maryland. Formal collaborative (joint) submissions
that advance research discoveries toward development of a product are encouraged and will receive
priority. University sponsored projects must receive prior authorization to apply and have undergone
due diligence from their technology transfer office.
Application: The applicant will identify the project and specific milestones to be completed with the
funding, including a budget that is linked to these milestones.
The applicant must:
1. Complete the Applicant and Project Summary Forms
2. Complete the Application Details Form and include a Principal Investigator CV.
3. Companies must provide a full business plan including a 5 year pro forma financial statement,
and any current and submitted grant applications including title, abstract, duration dates and
budget total. University applicants must provide a list of all related current and submitted grant
applications, including title, abstract, duration dates and budget total.
4. Submit electronically to grants@marylandbiocenter.org
5. Be prepared to present the project to a review panel at the Maryland Biotechnology Center
