We have looked at the Light Scattering Instruments of the following companies: 1. Precision Detectors 2. Wyatt Technology 3. Malvern Instruments 4. Brookhaven Instruments 5. Particle Sizing Systems 6. ALS We require an instrument that can perform both static (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) at multiple scattering angles. The dynamic light scattering must make use of: multiple detectors that can be positioned in 5º scattering angle steps, a multi-tau correlate, a laser source with wavelength > 600 nm, at least 40 mW of energy, an avalanche photodiode detector, a temperature controlled sample chamber, capability to add cross correlation, and a more powerful laser. Only Precision Detectors makes an instrument that meets these specifications. Malvern, and Particle Sizing Systems make instruments that only do either static or dynamic light scattering and their instruments only allow measurements at a single angle. While Wyatt makes a multi-angle instrument it is only a SLS instrument and the angles are fixed. Their DLS instruments only use a single angle . Brookhaven Instruments, and ALS make multi-angle SLSDLS instruments. The ALS instruments costs over $100,000 much more expensive that the Precision Detectors model. The Brookhaven Instruments systems is a goniometry type instrument that only allows a single scattering angle to be observed at a time. Further the goniometry design utilizes a large external laser and has the detector mounted on a long arm that rotates about the sample. This design requires that the arm must be moved to each angle prior to a measurement. The movement of the detector requires that the detector be alignment at each position making the instrument difficult and time consuming to use.
