Dear Prospective Student,
Thank you for your interest in Pantano High School. Our enrollment packet outlines the
school’s mission and goals and includes forms that provide the information necessary to make your
transition to our school as smooth as possible. A checklist is provided to assist you in being
prepared with the items necessary to complete the enrollment process.
When you return this packet to the school, please have the following items available:
 Completed enrollment packet
 Withdrawal form from your previous school
 Immunization records
 Birth Certificate
 Two proofs of residence (ex. mortgage statement, utility bill, etc.)
In order for the enrollment process to be complete, a meeting between the student, parent(s),
and the principal will be held to review the packet. Please allow 20-30 minutes for this meeting.
Pantano High School is a school of choice, so it is important that it be the best placement for all
involved.

MISSIONS/GOALS
MISSION: Pantano High School, an alternative school, is committed to serving the specialized needs of our
“at risk” youth. It is our mission to provide a mutually respectful environment where faculty and staff
encourage and celebrate student successes and students develop a genuine sense of value and belonging.
GOALS:





To provide a variety of educational delivery methods and teacher interaction to facilitate student
achievement in each course. All courses are aligned to Arizona State Standards and the Vail
Unified School District’s Essential Standards.
To have students master the concepts presented. To do this, students must pass each course
with at least a 70%.
To create an individual graduation plan for each student and monitor their progress toward that
plan.
To create a transitional plan and opportunities that will prepare students for life after high school.
To seek parent and community involvement in the development and mentorship of the students
and the programs.
SCHOOL INFORMATION

Pantano High School is accredited by AdvancED/North Central Association (NCA)

School hours: Full day--8:30am-3:26pm Monday-Friday Half day—8:30am-12:30pm
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:


Students must be at least be in their third year of high school and behind by at least four credits.
Admission priority will be given according to the number of years in school (fourth and fifth year
students have priority over third year students.)
Students and parents must go through an interview process with the administrator prior to
admission.
CURRICULUM:
 Students will be required to meet the Vail Unified School District graduation requirements in order
to receive a diploma.
o 20 Credits (including the Senior Exit Project)
o Content may be covered in a variety of ways including traditional classes that are
scheduled in six-week or twelve-week units and/or through the use of Arizona State
Standards based packets when deemed necessary.
o Students may take courses at other schools in the district while attending Pantano. A
conference with the counselor of that school is required prior to enrolling.
o Students may participate in work-study program in which credit may be earned.
o Currently students enrolled at Pantano High School are not allowed to participate in extra
curricular activities at other Vail District high schools.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
 After 10 consecutive unexcused absences, students are withdrawn in accordance with the state
requirements.
 On the 11th absence, the student is dropped from Pantano High School.
 Reasons for the absence can be provided via a phone call to Mrs. Newsom at
879-3945 or by a letter from the parent or legal guardian. If a student is absent due to an
appointment, an excuse from the provider is necessary in order for the absence to be marked as
excused. We respectfully request that all appointments be made after school hours.
 After 48 hours, an absence will not be excused, so please provide the information in a
timely manner.
 Absences shall only be excused for inevitable and significant reasons such as illness,
bereavement, other family emergencies, and in observance of major religious holidays for the
family’s faith. Requests for absences due to vacations or other extenuating circumstances must be
made to the principal and made at least two weeks in advance of the requested dates. The
principal reserves the right to accept or deny all requests for excused absences.
Pantano High School participates in the ACT NOW truancy program through the Pima County Attorney’s
office. This program is designed to help reduce truancy in Pima County schools. Punctual and regular school
attendance is essential for success in school. Please do your part as a parent or guardian to ensure that your
child attends school regularly and is on time.
GRADING POLICY
 Students must pass each course with at least a 70% to receive credit for that course.
 Classroom assignments missed due to unexcused absences can be made up after school hours.
Please check with teacher(s) to make those arrangements.
HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is an integral part of the learning process. It is our practice to assign homework that is
meaningful and relevant to the concepts being covered in the classroom. Therefore in the event that
homework is assigned it is our expectation that it will be completed in a manner that supports the
learning process.

Enrollment Requirements
All students must have the following information in order to register at
Pantano High School.

Immunization Records- Upon enrollment, Vail District schools require up to date
immunization records. Pursuant to A.R.S. 15-871-874, a student shall not attend school
unless documented proof of immunization has been provided.

Birth Certificate- The 1987 Legislature passed a law designated to help trace the location
of any child who is reported missing. So that schools may assist in this effort, A.R.S.
Sec. 15-871 requires that you, the parent or guardian of the child you are enrolling in our
District provide one of the following to this office:
1. A certified copy of the pupil's birth certificate.
2. Other reliable proof of the pupil's identity and age, including the pupil's
baptismal certificate, an application for a Social Security number, or original
school registration records and an affidavit explaining the inability to provide a
copy of the birth certificate.
3. A letter from the authorized representative of an agency having custody of the
pupil certifying that the pupil has been placed in the custody of the agency as
prescribed by law.
Birth Certificate Information must be provided no later than 30 days from the enrollment
date.

Proof of Residency (2)- Mortgage agreement or rental agreement, AND a utility or
phone bill. Proof of residency must show current address along with parent or legal
guardian’s name. (Not required for Charter Schools.)

Proof of Legal Guardianship/Custody- If a guardian other than a natural parent will be
registering the student, a court document showing current guardianship must be provided
at the time of registration. If divorced, you MUST provide legal documentation of
custody agreement.


Pantano High School Parents!
At the time of enrollment, your child will need to meet Arizona’s school immunization requirements.
To attend Pantano High School your child must have the immunizations as outlined below:
Polio (OPV and/or IPV)
4 doses at any age but 3 doses meet requirements for ages 46 if at least one was given on or after the 4th birthday; 3
doses meet requirements for 7 years and older if at least one
was given on or after the 4th birthday
DTP Ages 6 & Under
6 doses at any age, but 4-5 doses meet requirements for ages
4-6 if at least one dose was on or after the 4th birthday
Ages 7 & Older
4 doses at any age, but 3 doses meet requirements for ages
7-18 if at least one dose was on or after the 4th birthday. If it
has been 10 years since the last DTP your child may need a
tetanus booster or TdaP.
If it has been 5 years since the last DTP your child may
need a tetanus booster or TdaP.
Ages 11 & Older
Meningococcal
1 dose for students 11 years old & older
MMR
2 doses (The first dose can be no earlier than 4 days before
the 1st birthday.)
Hepatitis B
3 doses, 3rd dose must be at 24 weeks or older
Tetanus Booster (Tdap)
To be given at least ten years from date of last DTP/DTaP
or Tdap.
Varicella (chicken pox)
Must have 1 dose. Children over 13 yrs. old should receive
2 doses at least 4 weeks apart. Show proof of immunization
or history of varicella disease.
Please bring a complete copy of your child’s shot records with you when you register. If you have
any questions please feel free to call the Pantano High School Office at 879-3945, your family
doctor or clinic, or the Pima County Health Department.

Bus Stop Information
Vail Unified School District #20 School Board policy E-2281 EEAE-EA
1. Students will use assigned bus stop, arrive 5 minutes prior to leave time.
2. Students are required to present their current school ID to the driver (everyday).
3. Requests for using a different stop or riding a different route will be called in by the
student’s guardian to their school office before 1:30 pm (half days 10:30).
4. School buses and bus stops are school “safety zones” and misconduct will be treated
quickly and lawfully if necessary.
Arizona Transportation Regulations R17-0-104 (D)
1. Passengers shall comply with all instruction given by the School Bus Driver.
2. Passengers will sit with their backs against the seat backs, their legs facing towards the
front of the school bus and clear of all aisles when bus is in motion.
3. No animals, insects, or reptiles (the exception of service animals, as defined at A.R.S. §
11-1024 (J)
4. No glass objects.
5. No alcohol, tobacco, controlled substance, weapons including an explosive device, gun,
knife, or other weapons as defined by school district policy.
Passenger Conduct
Vail School District #20 School Board policy E-2281 EEAE-EA
1. Passengers shall not eat, drink, chew gum or spit on a school bus.
2. Passengers are prohibited from obscene or threatening language or gestures.
3. Throwing of any objects in the bus or out the windows is prohibited and can lead to
suspension and possible apprehension by law enforcement.
4. Passengers engaging in physical conflicts will be detained until law enforcement arrives.
Violations to the rules, regulations and passenger conduct will have
consequences that correspond to the severity of the misconduct.
Consequences include written referrals to possible permanent suspensions
from the school bus.

Bus Stop Information:
1. Students are assigned to bus stops based on their home address. Requests to use a different stop must be written by a
parent or school official.
2. Student should arrive at the assigned bus stop 5-10 minutes prior to the scheduled stop time.
3. While at bus stop, student must refrain from running, horseplay, or any activity that may result in injury to
themselves or others.
4. Students must respect the property of homeowners close to the bus stop. The transportation department may remove
a bus stop if there is a problem at the homeowner’s property.
Transportation Rules: The State of Arizona says:
1. Passengers on a school bus shall comply with all instructions given to them by the School Bus Driver.
2. Passengers shall sit with their backs against the seat backs; their legs facing towards the front of the school bus and
all parts of their bodies clear of all aisles.
3. Passengers shall not place any part of their body outside a school bus window.
4. Passengers on a school bus shall not transport tobacco, alcohol or controlled substances, weapons or explosives,
animals, insects, or reptiles alive or dead, or glass items.
5. Musical instruments may not occupy needed seating space or block the aisles. Instruments shall not be placed in the
bus driver’s compartment or the step-well.
6. Students, who must cross the road at the bus stop, must be 10 feet in front of the bus before crossing the road.
Other Transportation Rules:
1. Passengers shall not eat, drink, chew gum, or spit on a school bus.
2. Passengers shall not use profanity, obscene or threatening language or gestures.
3. Passengers shall not throw or propel any objects through the air while on a school bus.
4. Passengers shall not fight. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
Violations to the above will result in the following consequences:
1. Verbal conference with student and possible seating change.
2. Written referral - driver will telephone parent and copy of referral will be sent home.
3. 2nd referral will result in a 1-3 day bus riding suspension.
4. 3rd referral will result in a 5-10 day bus riding suspension.
5. Severe offense or additional referrals may result in immediate long-term suspension.
6. Referrals on Activity Bus routes will result in immediate Activity Bus suspensions.
