Weekly Spelling Homework
Every Monday students receive three copies of the week’s words one to keep: at
home, in folder/planner, at school. Monday we discuss the featured prefix, suffix,
homophones, etc. and how an affixes meaning changes the root word; and the spelling
patterns used to add the affix. Tuesday through Thursday in class we practice making
words with the feature and using them properly in context. Friday we take an OAA
formatted spelling test. There is regular weekly homework explained below. On fourday weeks we may not have spelling, or we may use a shorter homophone list.
Monday – 5 Sentences
Choose 5 spelling words to write in sentences.
1. Sentences should explain the meaning of the spelling word using an
example or definition.
2. Sentences need to be at least eight words in length.
3. Number sentences and underline spelling words.
Tuesday – Making Words
1. Cut the letters off the top of the page (if you want).
2. Rearrange the letters to form words.
3. Write the words you make in the blanks.
4. The word that uses all the letters is the “Secret Word” to be written in
the final blank. This word usually uses the focus feature for the week.
Wednesday – Operations
Choose 5 different spelling words to “operate” on. Operating means to drop
letter(s), add letter(s), or change letter(s) to make a new word. Only use one
operation on each word. The idea is to see connections between the spelling
of different words.
charm  arm
spark  sparkle
stand  land
dropped the “ch”
added “le”
changed “st” to “l”
Thursday – Practice Test
On the handout:
1. Have a partner read the words to you while you spell. If no one can help
you can peek at the word then don’t look as you spell it on your own.
2. Check your spellings.
3. Write the incorrect words on the back 5 times each, and study them until
you are confident you know them.
