Explanatory notes

1 The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard: a All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under current legislation, including the Health and Safety in

Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments. b All work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities, events, and decisions. c All evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing, and method.

2 Definitions

Manually wrapping covers all processes where the cover is applied and secured manually. Product may be moved by conveyor and strapping can be manual, semiautomatic or fully automatic.

Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, onsite briefings, and supervisor’s instructions.

Wrapping covers the use of shrinkwrap, stretchwrap, plastic, medium density fibreboard (MDF) coversheets, paper, and pulp materials used to enclose products for distribution.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Explain fundamentals of product wrapping and wood product handling.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Function and purpose of the wrapping process are explained in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

1.2 Equipment used to manually wrap product is identified, and its role is explained, in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Range equipment may include but is not limited to – knives, guillotines, wire and strapping cutters, fork lifts, waste and recycle bins, conveyors, reel kickers, product lifts, corner protectors, strap.

1.3 Customer and worksite requirements for wrap finishing are explained in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Range wrapper type, labelling.

1.4 Hazards associated with manual wrapping are identified, and the role of protective equipment and safety features used to manage these, are explained in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Range hazards may include but are not limited to – moving plant, knives, paper cuts, lifting, electricity; safety features may include but are not limited to – safety isolation procedures, lockouts, emergency stops, guards.

1.5 Consequences of non-conformance with worksite standards are described in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Outcome 2

Wrap wood product efficiently and safely.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Safe work practices associated with manually wrapping product are identified and used in accordance with worksite policies and procedures and legislative requirements.

Range practices may include but are not limited to

– isolation procedures, lock outs, emergency stops, machine guarding, wearing appropriate safety equipment.

2.2 Selection of wrappers meets customer requirements.

Wrapping is carried out and meets production and customer requirements in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Range production and customer requirements may include but are not limited to – throughput, wrap security, labelling, absence of wrapping defects.

Outcome 3

Separate, store, recycle, and dispose of off-line wood product.

Range may include but is not limited to – rejects and/or downgraded wood product; wood product stored off line temporarily; packaging items including straps, pallets, and wrappers.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Off-line wood product is identified for separation, storage, recycling, or disposal, in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

3.2 Equipment is selected to handle the off-line product in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

3.3 Off-line wood product is separated, stored, recycled, or disposed of in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.
