Classification Solid Wood Manufacturing > Wood Product Manufacturing Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard: a All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under current legislation, including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments. b All work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities, events, and decisions. c All evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing, and method. 2 Definitions Routine maintenance refers to maintenance that does not require the services of a qualified service technician. Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions. Evidence requirements 1.1 Safe work practices associated with painting wood products using conventional spray painting techniques are identified, explained, and used in accordance with legislative requirements and worksite policies and procedures. Range 1.2 safe work practices may include but are not limited to – isolation procedures; emergency stops or cut-off procedures; checking of equipment; the wearing of appropriate safety equipment: eye protection, footwear, breathing or ventilation masks. The consequences of non-conformance with worksite standards are described in terms of equipment damage, production loss, and personal hazard. Outcome 2 Carry out routine maintenance on equipment used in spray painting. Evidence requirements 2.1 The parts of conventional spray guns are identified and their function stated in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 2.2 Routine maintenance is carried out in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 2.3 may include but is not limited to – gravity feed, suction feed, pressure feed, HVLP (high volume, low pressure), internal mix, external mix, airless. may include but is not limited to – compressor unit, pump, ancillary equipment. Equipment is checked and any faults identified are either repaired as part of routine maintenance or referred on to relevant personnel in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range Competenz SSB Code 101571 faults may include but are not limited to – tip leakage, fluttering spray, air-cap leakage, trigger leakage, uneven spray pattern, oil in line. Range Outcome 3 Prepare and apply surface coatings to wood products using conventional spray equipment. Evidence requirements 3.1 Spray equipment suitable to the task is selected and assembled in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. 3.2 Surface coatings are selected, prepared, and applied in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. 3.3 Spraying technique faults are identified and remedies applied in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. may include but is not limited to – spray fog, over-spray, runs, sags, ‘orange peel’, uneven application. Range 3.4 Spray equipment is dismantled, cleaned, and stored in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. 3.5 Production records are explained and completed in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.
