This unit standard is intended to be used by people involved in
the specialist filling and fairing sector of boat construction.
People credited with this unit standard are able to identify the
characteristics of boat surfaces requiring filling and fairing, and
mix and apply filler.

Explanatory notes
1
All required equipment must be set up, started up, operated, and shut down in
accordance with company procedures.

All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite
health and safety procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and
worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under the Health
and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent and delegated legislation.

All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite
environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and
worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations required under the
Resource Management Act 1991, and subsequent and delegated legislation.

All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management
requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions.

Surface filling in the context of this unit standard is for the purposes of achieving
surface fairness, as opposed to localised spot filling on nail and screw holes.

Assessment must include establishing fairness and filling appropriately an entire non
fair convex boat hull or deck surface exceeding 10m 2.

Definitions
Company procedures, documented or accepted procedures in the workplace where
the unit standard is being assessed.
Job requirements, requirements that may or may not be specified but require correct
choices to achieve including: following safety and workplace procedures and meeting
generally accepted trade practice standards.

Manufacturer’s specifications, include instructions that may apply to quantities, ratios,
temperatures, humidity, application rate, ventilation, material handling, taking
specified safety precautions, and application method.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Identify the characteristics of boat surfaces requiring filling and fairing.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Surface preparation is verified in accordance with job requirements and
manufacturer’s specifications.
1.2
Extent of surface non fairness is determined using battens and/or patterns and
marked in accordance with job requirements.
Outcome 2
Mix and apply filler.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Filler is mixed in accordance with job requirements and manufacturer’s
specifications.
2.2
Materials usage is monitored in accordance with job requirements.
2.3
Filler is applied in accordance with job requirements and manufacturer’s
specifications.
2.4
Surface is filled so that fair lines can be achieved across the entire surface in
accordance with job requirements.
