Preferred themes of projects and profile of partner
1.
Brief description on participant’s Organization
Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF) is а NGO which almost 15 years has been working
to conserve biodiversity in Bulgaria and neighboring countries, supports the participation
of citizens and local communities in managing natural resources and protected areas and
raises public awareness on the issues of biodiversity and nature protection.
BBF has a Central office in Sofia and four branches – Strandja in Bourgas, Belasitsa in
Blagoevgrad, Eastern Rhodopes in Haskovo and Kaliakra in Bulgarevo (Kavarna). BBF is a
member of IUCN, CEEweb, Bulgarian Donor’s Forum, the Bulgarian Association for
Alternative Tourism and ForTheNature in Bulgaria Coaltition. BBF is successor of the
Bulgarian-Swiss Biodiversity Conservation Programme, implemented in the period 19942004. During the years BBF has a wide range of different International partners such as
Norway, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Ukraine, Turkey, Georgia, Romania and etc.
2. Sector of activities of participant’s Organization
BBF works in five main areas: Protected Areas and Species, Green Belt and Natura 2000,
Educational and PR activities, Sustainable Tourism, Campaigns and Coalitions. Among our
successes are designation of the Nature Park "Belasitza" and development of its
Management Plan, declared 14 protected areas, developed a Management Plan of the
Pirin National Park, and of the pending Management plan of Strandja Nature Park,
actualization of Central Balkan national Park Management plan, the Bulgarian Action plan
for the chamois, National plan for the conservation of the most important wetlands in
Bulgaria and etc. BBF is developing Action plan for Capercaillie, Three-toed Woodpecker
and White-backed Woodpecker. We are a coordinator of International initiative "Green
Belt" in Bulgaria. BBF prepared the announcement of the first new biosphere park in
Bulgaria – Strandja and etc. BBF works to restore prority habitata coastal lagoon in
Atanasovsko lake.

State institutions or NGOs with expertise in ecosystem services or plans to develop such
capacities as well as experince in integrated management of marine and inland water
resources, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, experience
in defending public interest for preserved nature and healthy living environment.
5. Please describe what you expect from the potential project partner from Bulgaria
BBF expects Partner to support us in development of project proposal and then in its
implementation and achieving project results, to be able to provide the know how in the
field of ecosystem services and management of marine and inland water resources in or
next to protected area, as well as to provide innovative techniques and technologies for
biodiversity conservation and to have experience in sectorial policies for the systematic
use of ecosystem services.
6. Please describe what you can offer to potential project partner from Bulgaria
Good knowledge in nature conservation in Bulgaria;
Good knowledge and experience in important for biodiversity areas as mountains –
Strandja, Belasitza, Ossogovo, Rodopi, Central Balkan; wetlands and more specific Burgas
Lakes and other, including their possibilities to provide ecosystem services;
Good organizational structure of BBF, including four registered branch of the foundation in
the country;
Good knowledge of the national and European legislation relating to environment
protection;
Qualified team of experts.
