These are listed on the next page. To prepare for the Act’s requirements Harvard needs to know who is working with Select Agents including toxins (and DNA from these agents) and nature of the studies contemplated (or in progress). Please help us by filling out this form. On October 25, 2001 as a consequence of the 9/11 terrorist attack, Congress passed and the President signed legislation affecting the possession of biological agents with Bioterrorism potential. These are called “Select Agents.” The legislation, called the USA Patriot Act, extends previous legislation that restricted the transport, but not the possession, of these agents. The new legislation restricts possession. Because the legislation is new we do not know how it will be implemented (as of August 2002). Never the less it is prudent to prepare for the future on the basis of current regulations. -2- Agent Amount in Lab Storage Planned Use Laboratory’s Location On the basis of this information we may register your lab with the Harvard Committee on Microbiological Safety and keep you informed of your responsibilities under the USA Patriot Act. If it is decided that your lab has to be registered we assign a registration number for the study. Periodically we will write and ask for an update as to your uses of Select Agents. This is an alphabetical listing of select agents as of 6 August 2002.
