Measure a pumpkin using a centimeter tape measure. Measure around the widest part, then around top to bottom. Draw a picture of your pumpkin. Label the measurement. New York Public Library’s main branch opened in 1911. Apply for a library card if you don’t have one. Visit a library. Ask for a book about weather. List as many different signs of the fall season as you can. Bring your list to class. With a friend or family member observe cloud types for one week. Record and describe your observations using pictures and words. Share with the class. Cleaner Air Week is this month. What is air pollution? List 5 causes of air pollution. Is there a cause of air pollution near your school? October is the foggiest month in Pittsburgh. To tally the number of foggy days this month, put a stone in a paper cup for each day that is foggy. The fire escape ladder was invented by J. B. Winters. If there was a fire at your home, would you use a fire escape ladder? Draw a fire escape plan for your home. Daylight Savings Time ends and Eastern Standard Time begins soon. What does this mean? What is different as a result? Make and fly a kite. Describe how the air effects its movement. Bring your kite to class and be prepared to answer questions. Place two bowls with six ice cubes in the sunlight. Cover one bowl with a black cloth and the other with a white cloth. Predict what will happen. Record your data. How much time passed for the ice in each bowl to melt? Tally the weather conditions for each day this month: Sunny Cloudy Rainy Snowy Have you heard of pumpkin pie? What about pumpkin soup? Find a recipe and have your family try it. Share your results with your class. Many insects seem to disappear after a frost. What are some clues that there are still some insects around outdoors? Design and make a wind vane. Test your wind vane to make sure it works. Bring your wind vane to school. Collect ten leaves. Make a leaf graph by placing similar leaves in rows.
