Conclusion
DURING THE ELEVENTH CENTURY, THE POWER OF JAPAN'S CENTRAL GOVERNMENT
DECINED AND LARGE LANDOWNERS GAINED MORE AND MORE POWER. THIS MARKED
THE BEGINNING OF THE FEUDAL SYSTEM IN JAPAN.
FARMERS TRADED THEIR LANDS TO STRONG WARLORDS IN EXCHANGE FOR
PROTECTION. RIVAL WARLORDS CONSTANTLY BATTLED TO GAIN MORE AND MORE
LAND. TO PROTECT THEMSELVES, WARLORDS SURROUNDED THEMSELVES WITH AN
ELITE CLASS OF WARRIORS CALLED SAMURAI.
JAPANESE SAMURAI LIVED BY A CODE OF HONOR CALLED BUSHIDO, A VERY
DEMANDING CODE WHICH GUIDED EVERY ASPECT OF THE WARRIORS' LIVES.
DURING THIS SAME TIME PERIOD (11TH CENTURY), THE FEUDAL SYSTEM DEVELOPED IN
WESTERN EUROPE. AS IN JAPAN, FEUDAL LORDS BATTLED RIVAL LORDS TO PROTECT
THEIR ESTATES AND ALSO TO GAIN MORE LAND. SOLDIERS CALLED KNIGHTS
PROTECTED LORDS. IN EXCHANGE, KNIGHTS WERE GIVEN LAND (FIEFS) FROM THE
LORD'S ESTATES.
EUROPEAN KNIGHTS LIVED BY A CODE OF HONOR CALLED CHIVALRY, A CODE OF
HONOR THAT DEMANDED THE KNIGHTS DEVOTE THEMSELVES TO THEIR FEUDAL LORD,
HEAVENLYL LORD, AND CHOSEN LADY.

LEARNING ABOUT THESE HONOR CODES HELPS US UNDERSTAND BOTH THE
SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES OF THESE 2 FEUDAL SYSTEMS (JAPAN &
WESTERN EUROPE).
LEARNING ABOUT HONOR CODES FROM OTHER CULTURES ALSO HELPS US REFLECT
ABOUT OUR OWN "UNWRITTEN" HONOR CODES.
