Leonardo Gallery presents: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Brett Davis Ancient Future Serafino Catallo Disambiguation September 24 to October 22, 2009 Reception: Thursday, October 1, 7-9 pm Artists' Talk: Saturday, October 3, 2 pm Leonardo Gallery is pleased to announce exhibitions by two established gallery artists Serafino Catallo entitled Disambiguation and Brett Davis entitled Ancient Future. By breaking down and building up relationships between colour, line and form, Catallo’s work celebrates painting for its inherent character and means of application. Inspired by the colour field painters of the mid-century, he further investigates in abstract principles by applying rather unorthodox techniques, such as staining and dripping, sanding, and etching in textures. His compositions, thus formed from sharply compartmentalized and asymmetrical shapes to diffused planes of opulent colours, emphasize his argument according to which “art is a mode of reason; it is as scientific as it is emotional”. Serafino Catallo has completed his BFA at York University, Toronto, specializing in painting and colour theory. His works are a celebrated part of several international private, public, and corporate collections including those of DeLoitte & Touche, AT&T, Chrysler Corporation, and Delta Airlines. His first published series of prints were released in the fall of 2000. Catallo has been represented by Leonardo Gallery since 2006. Ancient Future chronicles Brett Davis’s overall sculptural practice. His framework, the supremacy of the vertical, reveals its roots in the tradition of the Classical Western art and architecture. Used only as an organizing principle in this exhibition, this convention has been balanced out by the fact that it is presented in a contemporary format: a female figure, fragmented, “abandoned in its state of creation projecting a state of (in)completion”… With this concept, Davis hopes that his work “reinforces the feelings of optimism and good faith in our present-day society that in an attempt to project into the future reflects on the knowledge and ingenuity of ancient civilizations.” Brett Davis was born in Toronto, Ontario. He has graduated with honours from Toronto’s Central Technical School in 1981 majoring in sculpture, and is a member of the Sculptures Society of Canada and The Royal British Society of Sculptures. Brett has created custom and commission based cast bronze sculpture for more than 25 years, which earned him an international reputation in Asia, England, USA and Canada. This is his first exhibition in Leonardo Galleries. Leonardo Galleries, located in the Yorkville district of Toronto, is devoted to the promotion of contemporary art.
