THE INDIAN CENTRE FOR CLIMATE AND SOCIETAL IMPACTS RESEARCH
(ICCSIR)
Employment announcement
ICCSIR is a non-profit, section-25, public-private partnership organization for climate and societal
impacts research, education, and applications. It is being set up in the Ahmedabad Education Society
campus in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. There are various categories of employment in ICCSIR; permanent
faculty members, visiting faculty members, permanent research scientists, visiting scientists, project
research associates, and junior research fellows/research assistants. Access to state-of-the-art models,
data sets, and computing facilities will be available. Opportunities for scientific and educational
collaborations within and outside India will also be available. Further information about ICCSIR is
available from www.iccsir.org. ICCSIR invites applications for the following positions:
1. Research associate for a project on “nowcasting” of rainfall, heat waves, cold waves, and freezefrost using infrared radiances and visible reflectances from INSAT and other satellites, data from
raingauges and automated weather stations, and model-assimilated weather observations.
Background
requirements
include
a
Ph.D.
degree
in
Meteorology/Physical
Oceanography/Physics/Hydrology/Applied Mathematics; and relevant experience of using
satellite and model-assimilated data, and statistical analysis techniques.
2. Research associate for a project on mesoscale weather forecasting for western India, using
Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and other mesoscale models; infrared radiances and
visible reflectances from INSAT and other satellites; data from raingauges, automated weather
stations, and weather radars; and model-assimilated weather observations from the NCEP-GFS
and NCMRWF assimilation systems. Background requirements include a Ph.D. degree in
Meteorology/Physical Oceanography/Physics/Hydrology/Applied Mathematics; and relevant
experience of using the WRF and/or other mesoscale models, and satellite and model-assimilated
data.
3. Research associate for a project on modeling regional climate changes in western India, using
the NCAR Coupled Climate System Model 3 (CCSM3), and other global and regional coupled
climate models. Background requirements include a Ph.D. degree in Meteorology/Physical
Oceanography/Physics/Hydrology/Applied Mathematics; and relevant experience of using the
CCSM3 and/or other climate models.
4. Research associate for a project on analysis of regional climate variability and changes in
western India, using observations, model-assimilated data, and climate model output. Background
requirements include a Ph.D. degree in Meteorology/Hydrology/Statistics; and relevant
experience of climate data analysis.
5. Research associate for a project on assessment of vulnerability of important crops in western
India to sub-seasonal and longer-term climate variability and potential climate changes, using
crop models such as DSSAT, CERES, and EPIC. Background requirements include a Ph.D.
degree in Agriculture and Crop Modelling; and relevant experience of using crop models.
6. Research associate for a project to develop an experimental agricultural advisory system for
important crops in western India, using crop models such as DSSAT, CERES, and EPIC.
Background requirements include a Ph.D. degree in Agriculture and Crop Modelling; and
relevant experience of using crop models.

7. Junior Research Fellow for a project on “nowcasting” of rainfall, heat waves, cold waves, and
freeze-frost using infrared radiances and visible reflectances from INSAT and other satellites,
data from raingauges and automated weather stations, and model-assimilated weather
observations. Background requirements include an M.Sc./M.S. degree, preferably with relevant
experience in Meteorology/Physical Oceanography/Physics/Hydrology/Applied Mathematics;
and relevant experience of using satellite and model-assimilated data, and statistical analysis
techniques.
8. Junior Research Fellow for a project on mesoscale weather forecasting for western India, using
Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and other mesoscale models; infrared radiances and
visible reflectances from INSAT and other satellites; data from raingauges, automated weather
stations, and weather radars; and model-assimilated weather observations from the NCEP-GFS
and NCMRWF assimilation systems. Background requirements include an M.Sc./M.S. degree,
preferably
with
relevant
experience

Meteorology/Physical
Oceanography/Physics/Hydrology/Applied Mathematics; and relevant experience of using
satellite and model-assimilated data, and statistical analysis techniques.
9. Outreach Specialist to edit a quarterly newsletter to convey climate and societal impacts
information to stakeholders and policymakers; to serve as the “translator” between the Centre’s
scientists, and stakeholders and policymakers; and to organize workshops, conferences, and other
meetings. Background requirements include an M.Sc./M.S. degree in Meteorology/Physical
Oceanography/Physics/Hydrology, and relevant public relations and event management
experience. Working knowledge of Gujarati and Hindi is desirable.
Experience of using Unix/Linux-operated workstations and servers, and graphics software such as
GrADS and IDL is desirable for positions 1 to 8. Starting positions, salary, and fringe benefits will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience. Selections will be made based on merit as set out in
applicable laws. The appointments in these positions will begin on or about 15 September 2008.
Although initial appointments will be for three years, performance-based permanent appointments will be
possible after three years. These positions will remain open until filled; however, to ensure priority
attention, please send an application including a curriculum vita, a statement of research interests (where
