Winsford Town Council Official Press Release HUNDREDS ENJOY THE CHRISTMAS STREET FESTIVAL – DESPITE THE WEATHER! Hundreds of people braved the appalling weather to enjoy a spectacular Winsford Christmas Street Festival on 27th November. The fun began with over 100 local primary school children taking part in a lantern parade from the shopping centre to the festival site along the Old High Street. They were joined in the parade by a life size ‘Reindeer’ created in ‘War Horse’ style by local artists Derek and Anne Johnson. Then at 5pm, Town Mayor Ailsa Gaskill-Jones turned on the towns Christmas tree lights, with the help of Bruce Jones (Les Battersby from Coronation Street) and Austin Armacost (Big Brother) who are appearing in the panto ‘Snow White’ at the Northwich Memorial Court. There was live music by local bands and solo artists as well as a Christmas market, funfair, street entertainers, carol singers – and of course Father Christmas which all added to the festive fun. The evening ended with a spectacular firework display. Free tractor and trailer rides through the one and a half miles of Christmas lights did a roaring trade all evening! Old High Street hair salon ‘British Hair Waves’ won ‘Best Dressed Christmas Shop window’ as judged by the Mayor, with the ‘Hair and Beauty Salon’ a close second. Said Town Clerk Alan Warburton ‘ In spite of the dreadful weather there was a great turnout for this year’s festival which is now in its fifth year and is a wonderful example of local community groups pulling together to put on a great show for the town.’ EDITORS NOTE: The Winsford Christmas Street Festival is organised by a partnership consisting of representatives from Winsford Town Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Winsford Cross Shopping Centre, Sharlands Funfair, local churches, The Hive, Cheshire Constabulary, Winsford Academy.
