We hope that our letter and clinical request form find all of you well in your corner of physical therapy
clinical education. We know that this is a busy time of year for Center Coordinators, receiving clinical
requests from many physical therapy programs. Here are the latest updates from Mount St. Joseph
University:
Introducing Four New Faces in the DPT Program
Dr. Jean Shannon joined the MSJ faculty as a full time Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of
Clinical Education in January, 2015. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Physical Therapy from St.
Louis University; and DPT from University of Kentucky. Her clinical background includes practice in
varied settings, with an emphasis in neurorehabilitation, predominantly with the stroke population. She
has been involved with academia, both as an Instructor and, as ACCE. You can reach Jean at

Michael Obert, PT, MPT, OCS is entering his first year as a full-time Instructor in the Doctor of
Physical Therapy Program. Mike earned his Master’s in Physical Therapy in 2006 from Saint Louis
University and his Orthopedic Clinical Specialty Certification in 2009. Mike is also specialized in
Graston Technique, Functional Dry Needling, Vestibular Rehabilitation, and Industrial Rehabilitation.

Greta Fyffe, Administrative Assistant, joined the department in September of 2013 after several years
away from the workforce. Prior to her career change, Greta obtained her CPA license and worked in
public accounting and corporate finance. Greta has brought energy and creativity since joining the

Karen Stirk, Administrative Assistant, joined the PT staff at the Mount in September, 2014. Although
she has previously worked for various organizations in various capacities, Karen really enjoys working in
higher education because she likes helping students and being able to see them advance through their

MSJ DPT Program Receives Reaffirmation of Accreditation
The accrediting body for physical therapy education, Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy
Education (CAPTE), announced its decision of Reaffirmation of Accreditation for the program for the
next ten years (through December 2024), the maximum time length awarded. This Summary of Action
decision issued by CAPTE was made based on information received from the Self-Study Report
submitted in March and the Visit Report conducted in May, 2014. This re-accreditation allows our
program to continue uninterrupted and also assures the public, institution, current and prospective
students that we meet established national standards to deliver educational preparation for the practice of
Physical Therapy. Thank you to all community partners who helped us make this a success!

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially became Mount St. Joseph University on July 1, 2014. The
designation change to University positions the Mount to leverage its expanding academic offerings
including increasing its number of graduate programs for masters and doctorate degrees, as well as
implementing online programs.
MSJ PT Community Awards
While the official deadline for nominations was March 1st, we still welcome nominations for the MSJ PT
Community Awards for practicing PTs. Please visit this webpage for more information about the awards,
criteria and a link to the online nomination form:http://www.msj.edu/academics/graduateprograms/doctor-of-physical-therapy1/dpt-awards/. We will accept materials until April 1, 2015.
PT CSIF Web
The APTA has officially transitioned the Clinical Site Information Form (CSIF) to the online PT CSIF
Web platform, managed by Academic Software Plus (the same company that manages PT CPI Web). All
clinical sites are strongly encouraged to complete their online CSIFs at
https://csifweb.amsapps.com/user_session/new; this is especially important for clinical sites whose paper
CSIFs are more than two years old. PT CSIF Web uses the same user name (email address) and password
that one uses to access PT CPI Web. If you do not have a user name and password for either system,
please contact us. Access can also be granted to students interning at your facility as a way for them to
“give back” for the clinical instruction they receive.
Electronic Communications
This is the third year that we will only be sending this letter and clinical request form by email. We
continue to phase out traditional, paper mailings in our clinical education program. As we try to “go
green”, don’t forget that many valuable clinical education resources and links can be found on our clinical
education webpage www.msj.edu/ptclined. This includes an electronic submission form for your 2016
clinical education offers (under Resources for Clinical Sites).
Reminders Regarding MSJ Clinical Education Curriculum and Introductions to Clinical
Experience
All four of our full-time internships continue to take place in the students’ third year, after the entire
didactic curriculum. Webelieve that this allows our curriculum to be better integrated across practice
patterns and to develop students who are academically prepared to complete their full-time internships in
any practice setting, for any rotation. We have found that this also allows clinical facilities more
flexibility to offer internships in four different internship timeframes, regardless of their clinical settings
or populations.
Our clinical education course called “Introduction to Clinical Experience” depends on the commitment of
several local Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Dayton clinical facilities each year. Our secondyear students complete four weeks of clinical experience just after they have completed basic clinical
courses and labs in objective tests and measures, mobility and gait training, therapeutic exercise,
modalities, documentation and communication. Because these experiences take place early in the
curriculum, before population-specific clinical courses, and for such short duration, the students are not
expected to demonstrate mastery of their clinical skills or reasoning. The primary objective is to allow
them a first opportunity to acclimate to clinical culture and to receive hands-on practice of basic clinical
skills with patients and clinicians.
In order to gain exposure to these basic skills across the continuum of PT practice, the students spend two
weeks in an outpatient setting and two weeks in an inpatient setting. Due to the brevity of these
experiences, we only solicit offers from “commutable” clinical facilities (≤ 70 minutes from Cincinnati)
and we do not use the PT CPI. We are requesting these Introduction to Clinical Experience slots again for
2016, requesting a four week commitment from the clinic (though not necessarily a single CI), in order to
place two different students, for two weeks each.
2015 Internship Reminders
For those clinics that are matched for 2015 clinicals, you can expect a cover letter from the program and
the students themselves no less than four weeks before the placement begins. If you are unable to
accommodate a clinical placement, please contact us as soon as possible so that alternative arrangements
can be made.
Class of 2016 Final Internship Interests
The Class of 2016 will be completing their 9-week, Final Internships in an “Area of Student Interest”
from February 29, 2016-April 29, 2016. Here are some of the areas in which these students have
