Placement FY1 Emergency Clinical Decisions Unit The department The Emergency Clinical Decision Unit is part of the Emergency Department (ED) and is managed by the Consultant Emergency Physicians. There is a rapid turnover of patients and it provides an ideal opportunity for FY1 doctors to develop the necessary clinical competencies in a closely supervised and supported environment. The unit has 13 beds accommodating the following categories of patients: Patients admitted under the care of the ED physicians with an anticipated length of stay <48 hours. These include patients with cellulitis, head injury, trauma, overdose, allergic reactions, falls, epilepsy etc. Patients awaiting the results of investigations in order that a decision to refer & admit or discharge can be made. Clinically stable patients referred to specialty teams eg. surgery, ENT, orthopaedics, spinal who are awaiting an inpatient bed. Gavin The doctor will be directly supervised by the ED consultant on duty for the ECDU. Duties will include the following: Daily consultant ward round Arranging investigations Clerking new patients In-patient and out-patient drug prescriptions Liaising with inpatient teams Referring patients for outpatient follow-up Discharge summaries The FY1 doctor will develop close working relationships with nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and medical colleagues.
