Mrs. Stevens Informal Algebra II 2015 Fall Semester Classroom Management Plan My main goal is for every student to reach his or her fullest potential in my classroom. I hope to create a safe, productive and enjoyable environment. In order to accomplish this goal, however, we are all going to have to work together. The following guidelines should help all of us have a great and productive year. I believe all classroom guidelines should be based on RESPECT. RESPECT for others and RESPECT for yourself. You can show respect for others by: Using only kind and positive words and expressions. Listening when others are talking. Waiting your turn to join class discussion. Staying quietly on task so that others can concentrate and do their very best. Allowing others to feel safe in their space by keeping your hands, feet, and belongings to yourself. Following directions completely and immediately. Encouraging others. Completing your own work and encouraging others to do so also. You can show respect for yourself by: Using class time wisely to work on the assigned task. Being prepared both mentally and physically to start learning when the bell rings. Staying on task and productive for the entire class period. Doing your very best to complete all assignments promptly. Participating fully and productively in all group work and seatwork assignments. **All rules and expectations stated in the Columbia High School Handbook apply and will be enforced.** Consequences When we don’t respect each other, we all suffer. Unfortunately, sometimes students will make bad choices. In the event a student is not being respectful of this classroom, other students, teachers, our school or themselves, the following consequences will be followed at my discretion. Verbal warning Conference with teacher Parent correspondence via phone or email Discipline referral to office. Some offenses may require a more immediate approach in order to protect the others in the classroom and will be handled accordingly. Required Materials Textbook, calculator, pencils, erasers, pen, three-ring binder or folder with paper and or notebook, pink, yellow and blue or green highlighter, and a good attitude! Procedures Everyone benefits from knowing and following the classroom procedures. The following procedures will maximize learning time and production. Absences: All homework and assignments will be posted on Google Classroom. It is the student’s responsibility to check and complete the assignment(s) prior to returning to class. Check the appropriate folder for any worksheets or notes that were not posted online upon your return. You will have the same number of days you missed plus one to make up the work. After that time, you will receive zeros for missing assignments. If you missed on the day of a test or quiz that was announced prior to you absence, you will be required to complete the test or quiz upon your return to class. If the test or quiz was not announced prior to your absence, it is your responsibility to schedule a time outside of class to take the assessment. You will have one calendar week from the day of the missed quiz or test to complete a make-up. In either case, the make-up test or quiz may be different, longer, or harder than the original test. If you had a PAF, were in the AR room, or were suspended all work is due when you return and all tests/quizzes will be completed the day of return or on a date set by the teacher. For family vacations, the student must have a PAF and all homework will be due when the student returns unless otherwise discussed with the teacher. Students receive a ‘0’ for all homework not completed by the date of return. All tests/quizzes will be scheduled the day of return or on a date set by the teacher. Students receive a ‘0’ for all work missed because of an unexcused absence. Class Routine: Upon entering the classroom, pick up any handouts from the front table, sharpen your pencils, turn off your cell phones, and store personal belongings and other class supplies under the desk. Take out your homework and follow the directions on the board. Typically, students will be required to check homework or begin the bell work. Questions will be answered and information reviewed from previous day. New material will be introduced and practiced by the class via seatwork, board work, or group work. Work begins on new assignment. If class time is allowed for assignments, students must begin immediately. This is the time to ask questions and have information clarified. Please use this time wisely! Google Classroom Policy Announcements, homework, assignments, notes, and additional classroom content will be posted online in our Google Classroom. It is the student’s responsibility to check their email and Google Classroom daily for information and updates. Cell Phone Policy The student handbook policy will be enforced in this classroom. Please turn off and place your phone out of sight during class unless otherwise directed or approved by the teacher. Lanyard Policy All students will be required to wear their student ID(visible in the chest area) area during the school day. Students are subject to further school discipline for not following the school’s reasonable direction. Classroom Grade: CHS is on a semester basis with each of the two nine-week grades counting as 40% of the final semester-grade, and the exam counting as 20% of the final semester-grade. Columbia is on a semester basis; passing the second semester of a year long course does not equal one-full credit. Quarter grades will be determined based on homework, participation, class work, quizzes and tests. Homework and participation points will comprise no more than 30% of the student’s quarter grade. Homework: Homework is vital to your success in Math Class. Math is not a “spectator sport”. It requires practice to be successful. Please do your own work and show all of your work to get full credit for answers. Bell work and class work when graded will count as homework grades. Homework, group work, and class work will be graded for completion and accuracy on a random basis. All classwork and homework will be done in blue or black pen or pencil. Work done in any other color will not be accepted and receive a grade of zero. Participation: Each quarter you will have the opportunity to earn a participation grade for various activities in the classroom. To earn these points a student must: Have their completed assignment Bring textbook and supplies including a pencil Follow directions the first time given Appear attentive with head up and eyes open Answer or ask relevant questions Use class time to complete assignments Play a positive role in a group Late or Missing Homework: Assignments worth less than 5 points will not be accepted late and will receive a zero. Assignments worth more than 5 points will be accepted while the class is still in the assigned chapter and will be worth 50% of the original score. Quizzes and Tests: In order for everyone to have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential, everyone should be respectful and silent while completing quizzes and test. Keep your desk clear of unnecessary materials. Silence must be maintained until all students have completed their work and you have been given permission to talk. When you are finished you may read the next section, work on a new assignment, or study other material but you will not be permitted to leave the room. Finished papers are to be placed in the correct folder on the front desk. Calculators may or may not be permitted. Calculators: Students are required to bring their own calculator if they would like to use one during the allowed time. One of our goals in the mathematics department is to teach the students to use a calculator. Another goal of the mathematics department is to assure that all students have basic computational skill. The teacher will decide when a calculator is appropriate. The students should not use their calculator for assignments unless directed to do so by the teacher. The teacher will specify for how long and if the student may use the calculator on the quizzes and tests. Any student who forgets his/her calculator will work without one. Any student who uses a calculator on a quiz or tests that is to be taken without a calculator will receive a grade of 0 for that quiz or test. If you do not know if you can use a calculator, ask!!! It is better to be safe than sorry. Extra Help: If you are having trouble completing homework or just need some additional help, please let me know as soon as possible. Don’t get behind. It is very difficult to catch up. If you have difficulty, it is your responsibility to come and see me after school, during advisory period, or before the 7:45 a.m. bell. I am available after school until 3:15 daily.
