“Mathematics, A Beautiful Elsewhere”
exhibition at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain
from 21 October 2011 to 18 March 2012
A unique experience
designed by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain,
in collaboration with IHÉS
and presented under the patronage of UNESCO.
Initiated by the Fondation Cartier, this
adventure began through a contact with Hervé
Chandès, the Foundation's general manager,
who wanted to meet Jean-Pierre Bourguignon,
IHÉS director, and share with him an
exhibition project on mathematics, born of his
conversations with Michel Cassé, an
astrophysicist at the CEA and a researcher at
the IAP.
An appointment was made for 5 March 2009.
Since that first meeting, IHES and the
Fondation Cartier have maintained exchanges,
which intensified over time, were both rich
and fertile, fed by the work of artists and
curiosity and openness of all the Team of the
Fondation Cartier.
mathematics.
The Institute also welcomes the work of all the
teams who have worked on this exhibition,
who were always attentive to mathematicians
being placed at the centre of the project and
helped them contribute to the exhibition "to
the very end."
IHES hopes that this exhibition will be of great
value to both the public and the community of
mathematicians, in France and around the
world, and looks forward to meeting you at
the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain
- 261 bd Raspail - Paris 14th, from Friday,
October 21.
Acting as both consultant and matchmaker,
IHES initially helped the Fondation Cartier to
discover the mathematical community and to
establish contacts with some of its
personalities. The clearing of the huge scope of
mathematical areas was another facet of this
vast undertaking.
IHES is very pleased to participate in this
exceptional adventure. It would like to thank
the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain,
and especially its director general, most
warmly for this unique opportunity to
participate in a major project for a better
understanding by the general public of
