Debate/Persuasive Essay Unit Exit Slip 1. How did you feel about participating in your debate? I feel like I really meant what I said and I was persuasive. I also liked how everyone in my debate participated. It made the debate more fun and interesting. Before the debate, I felt really confident and excited. I knew the debate would be difficult; Hunter and I were against some tough debaters, but the harder the better! I feel like I did a great job although I could have made some better comebacks. I learned a lot about something I’d never heard of before. I felt comfortable. I don’t really get nervous when I perform so I wasn’t embarrassed. I felt that I had strong points and I made a good argument. I felt kind of nervous about debating against my close friends, but I was still excited because I was on the side I believed. I really liked participating in the debate! I thought it was interesting to be on the opposite side that I agreed with, because I wanted to say things, but I knew I couldn’t. I felt a little pressured because I was trying to ignore the audience, but they just stared and I got used to it. I felt cool to be able to argue without breaking the rules. 2. What did you learn from watching and taking notes during other students’ debates? I learned that some kids in our class can argue better than others. I was convinced in the athletes and steroids group that athletes shouldn’t be banned for the Hall of Fame even if they have taken steroids. The euthanasia group still made me think the same. I learned that when others are debating it makes me want to give my theories as well. I learned that everybody didn’t have to look at their cards to get good counterarguments and rebuttals. I also learned that when one arguer became stuck, they would move on to a new contention as quickly as possible. 3. Explain how preparing for and participating in your debate helped you write your persuasive essay? I later found my cards so I had all my information and I could get more supporting details. I also researched more and had an argument with my dad about it which really helped me. I prepared for my debate by finding both sides of the argument. This helped to know all of the counterarguments. It happened that I also found stronger facts for my side of the argument. I had points on both sides of my issue, so I could understand the two sides. During the debate, the sides were pretty equal, so it was hard to see who won. Because of this, I had a choice for which side I wanted to support for my essay. I heard what my partner had to say and what the opponents had to say against violent video games promoting violent behavior. I was prepared. I didn’t have to find any other data for my essay. Because of the debate, I was able to understand the counterarguments and what the rebuttal would say.
