It is co-hosted by IAVE and the organizing committee of the 13th IAVE Asia-Pacific Regional Volunteer Conference, and organized by Gyeongsangnam-do Volunteer Council and Gyeongsangnam-do Volunteer Center. The Conference also holds Youth Forum as a part of conference program, organized by Korea Work Youth Agency. The conference theme is “Volunteer Initiatives for a Sustainable Global Community: Climate Changes, Poverty, Conflict, and Natural Disasters.” The Conference is embracing four tracks on Climate Changes, Poverty, Conflict, and Natural Disasters. In addition to these four tracks, the Conference opens opportunities talking about special issues specific to volunteering: Corporate Volunteering, Volunteer Management, Volunteer Centers, and Definition of Volunteerism. The Asia-Pacific region is a densely populated area where about 70% of the world’s population dwell and it has been showing dynamic and rapid economic growth. Unfortunately, however, these socio-economic development and change brought about immense environmental pollution in this area. The impacts of climate change and natural disasters are also widespread in the Asia-Pacific region. Besides the recent Japanese earthquake, the region has faced numerous cataclysmic events, such as the earthquake in New Zealand, the tsunami in Southeast Asia, the cyclone in Myanmar, the landslide by melting Himalayas icecap in Nepal, desertification in Mongolia and China, forest-fire in Australia, sinking islands due to rising sea levels in the Pacific, etc. Such serious and continuous cases indicate that the region is suffering from the adverse impacts of climate change and natural disasters. Moreover, such catastrophic events also lead to poverty and conflict, as they damage economic growth and often contribute to social instability. The Conference offers opportunities to rethink whether we are fully aware of these issues, and if our volunteering practices are effective in protecting our global community against these precarious and inevitable life conditions of our generation. For the past few decades, we have realized that the issues and problems that we face cannot be managed only by governmental or corporate efforts. The Conference hopes that volunteers, volunteer managers, and all other participants from diverse sectors can together discuss and share how to live together, to cooperate, and to make further volunteering efforts for these issues. 2 Learn about Conference Theme, Tracks, and Program Volunteer Initiatives for a Sustainable Global Community: Climate Changes, Poverty, Conflict, and Natural Disaster Conference Tracks Track1. Volunteering & Climate Change - We ask you to cooperate and take considerate actions in many levels from individuals to the global community, as we get more exposed to threats to our lives and the ecosystem caused by climate change. Volunteering is crucial in providing solutions and alternative lifestyles for those affected by this issue. We would like presenters to share their own countries' climate change issues and various volunteering efforts that can relate to such problems. Track2. Volunteering & Poverty - Volunteers’ efforts are necessary to achieve MDGs set up by the United Nations to reduce poverty in the world. However, we have not had an opportunity to monitor and evaluate how volunteering is contributing to the reduction of poverty. We would like to invite you to share with us your various volunteering practices to prevent and alleviate poverty such as the improvement of education, community development, etc. Track3. Volunteering & Conflict - Conflicts break out for many reasons: religion, cultural differences, race, history, territorial disputes, limited resources, etc. Such conflicts, however, cannot be resolved without open communication and deeper understanding of various interest groups. We expect to learn from the presenters their efforts to create peace out of conflict. Track4. Volunteering & Natural Disasters - One of the most prominent roles of volunteers is natural disaster relief work. No matter they play a lead role or give hands for manual labours, it is almost impossible to recover areas affected by the disasters without volunteers’ participation so that they have been considered to be vital to tackle natural disasters. Now, it is time to step up to better policy, 3 strategy, implementation/management for volunteer works. We are encouraging presenters to bring up emerging issues relating to volunteering at natural disasters and critical lessons from your experiences.
