Annex 1: Analysis by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) of a small fragment of material of Bocoa mollis (Swartzieae) from RBG Kew’s Herbarium collections reveals the very unusual amino acids thought to be unique to Ateleia and Cyathostegia. Traditionally Bocoa has not been considered very closely related to these genera but DNA sequence analysis now suggests that some species of Bocoa, such as B. mollis, may have affinities to Ateleia whereas others, such as B. prouacensis, do not. LC-MS fails to detect the unusual amino acids in B. prouacensis supporting the new hypothesis on relationships.
