Role Title: Ranger Coongie Lakes/Innamincka Directorate: Regional Services Remuneration Level: OPS2 Branch/Region: SA Arid Lands CHRIS Position Number: EH 2562 Reports To (Title): Senior Ranger, Innamincka Directorate Business Purpose / Scope The Regional Services Directorate: Manages delivery of environment and natural resources management services across 8 regions in South Australia. Supports 8 NRM Boards to develop natural resources management plans, engage the community in the delivery of the plans and evaluate and report on the outcomes of the plans and the condition of natural resources at a regional level. Promotes integrated NRM outcomes across regional landscapes by engaging stakeholders, partners, regional communities and other agencies in sustainability projects. These projects are developed and delivered in accordance with Natural Resources Management Plans, the DENR corporate plan and whole of government and community economic and community development plans and strategies. Manages the State’s public lands for conservation &community benefit. The SA Arid Lands (SAAL) Region : Encompasses approx. 520,000 sq km - over 50 % of the state, with a population of about 10,000. The 2 major townships are Roxby Downs and Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy has a district council. The remainder of the region is unincorporated with facilities managed by Community Progress Associations under the Outback Communities Authority. Includes landscapes ranging from sandy and gibber stone deserts and breakaway country in the far north, to the rounded ranges and volcanic outcrops of the Gawler Ranges, and the mountainous northern Flinders Ranges in the east. Ephemeral saline lakes are present across most of the region, including Lake Eyre which is the terminus point for the Cooper Creek and the Diamantina Creek - major watercourses of the Lake Eyre Basin. Industries include the pastoral industry , being the biggest user of natural resources, with 222 pastoral properties covering 409,000 square km. Mining and petroleum are by far the most valuable industries in the region, accounting for over 70% of South Australia's mining output and generates over $3 billion annually. Manages 23 reserves including regional reserves, conservation reserves and National parks. There are 5 non-Government owned conservation reserves. Aboriginal managed lands include 6 pastoral leases, Indigenous protected areas, and a number of co-managed reserves. One of the State’s premier tourism destinations. Challenges include: Distance, sparse population, and the rapid expansion of the mining industry Supporting development and implementation of the SAAL NRM plan, as well as other complementary natural and cultural resource management plans Working in partnership with indigenous communities to cooperatively manage natural resources, parks and biodiversity and to support the management of their land Developing tourism and tourism infrastructure on reserves in a sustainable way to assist regional economies and enhance park management Ensuring stakeholders have the necessary information, knowledge and skills for the effective management of natural resources in the region. The Ranger contributes to the day-to-day management of Innamincka Regional Reserve, Coongie Lakes National Park and Strzelecki Regional Reserve. Key Role Outcomes Effective day to day management of Parks and Reserves is undertaken in line with business plans, park management plans, annual works plans, OHS&W and HR policies. Supervision of contractors and volunteers in line with OHS&W and HR policies. Regulation of Parks in accordance with relevant legislation. Cooperative working relationships fostered and maintained with key stakeholders and relevant Government bodies. Aboriginal cultural and European heritage sites are effectively managed and monitored Revenue collection is undertaken in a timely manner. Landscape restoration programs in threatened species management, threat abatement and pest plant activities are successfully implemented and maintained through on-park activities and Naturelinks. Unexpected and/or emergency situations are responded to in a timely and positive manner. Qualifications Degree in Natural Resource Management or other relevant field is desirable. SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Will be required to participate in fire management or associated duties. Will be required to undertake emergency operations including bush fire operations, commensurate with their fitness and training levels. This may require at times, some out of hours work including the participation in an “on-call” roster. Will be required to work 50% of weekends and public holidays for which a 13.1% loading will be paid. Will be based at Innamincka but may be required to work from another centre within the region or any region or management unit within the state. A departmental house is available. Will be required to spend extended periods away from their base. Will be required to wear a uniform in accordance with DEWNR policy. A current class C driver’s licence is essential. Will be required to undertake off-road driving Will be required to fly in light aircraft and/or helicopter. Will be required to operate or travel in a boat Will be entitled to eight return trips per year to Adelaide via the Moomba National Jet Service or equivalent dollar value. A medical clearance will be required to assess ability to work in a remote environment.
