JOB TITLE
SEASONAL ASSISTANT RANGER
OVERALL PURPOSE
To monitor and manage the recreational use of
Castlemartin Range during the spring and
summer period.

Officers of MOD and CCW who jointly fund the
post.
Volunteers
Range staff, volunteers, members of the public,
MOD conservation advisers and CCW staff.
Part time, weekends only from May to end of
September 2012 plus additional weekdays if
required during peak season (school holiday
periods)
Introduction: The Assistant Ranger job is to communicate between the Park Authority,
the MOD and CCW, the local community and users of the National Park. The Assistant
Ranger needs to provide a regular and strong presence at times when the public can
access the Castlemartin Range Coast.
Main Responsibilities
RECREATION AND SITE MANAGEMENT
Communicate and explain the special qualities and access opportunities at Castlemartin
Range to the local community and visitors.
Apply access arrangements including seasonal climbing restrictions, and permit only
arrangements for access to Range West, and ensure that they are enforced.
Ensure that members of the public stay within the permitted access areas of the Ranges
and take action against trespassers.
Maintain the seasonal climbing restrictions on Castlemartin Range.
Ensure that public access points to the Ranges are well presented, litter free and well
maintained.
MONITORING AND REPORTING
Monitor the use of the Ranges by the public and observe and collate visitor numbers and
activities.

Monitor and report on the effectiveness of climbing / access restrictions and take agreed
action where needed.
Observe and report on the interaction between recreational activities and features of
conservation importance.
Monitoring of features of conservation importance (breeding birds, plants, seals etc) when
required.
Maintain close liaison with local staff of the MOD at Castlemartin and CCW and report
relevant information and issues to the appropriate body where necessary.
Liaise closely with the Military Guard service and report relevant incidents promptly.
GENERAL
Work safely at all times.
Contribute to wider work of the Authority and carry out such other duties as may
reasonably be required.

Qualifications
NVQ Level 2 or similar environment related qualification or
training.
Experience
Experience of working in a public facing role.
Experience of work in a similar countryside or environmental
role.
Skills/Aptitudes
Knowledge of the coastal environment and wildlife
identification skills.
Demonstrable communication skills.
Able to collect and compile information accurately.
Other
Interest in and commitment to the conservation and enjoyment
principles of the National Park.
Ability to speak Welsh is desirable.
Full driving licence
The Authority expects a willingness from jobholders to develop an understanding of the
principles of the National Park and its purposes and where necessary will support staff
to develop Welsh language skills.
