Cycle of prayer

n

30 th March 2014 to to 28 th June 2014

1

Welcome to the Leicester Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, 30 th March to 28 th June

2014.

ALL CHANGE!

As you will see, there has been a major change in the content of the Cycle of

Prayer: we now have prayer requests from most of the parishes that feature each week.

Why change

? I enjoyed following a weekly theme, but sometimes there was no reason to choose a particular theme, and I began to feel it was a bit contrived.

And perhaps not really connecting with what is actually happening in the

Diocese.

By including prayer requests from parishes a) we are earthing the Cycle in the needs and concerns of our churches in the

Diocese b) when we pray for one another, instead of just names, we now have information about activities, projects and plans for the future which will give more substance to our prayers, and make them I think, more meaningful. c) this may encourage more of us to use the Cycle of Prayer regularly.

So I want to thank all those of you who responded to my appeal for information on your activities etc. I must apologise that I did not make it clear in every mailing that space is strictly limited, and therefore no more than 60 words. I have had to edit (reduce) some contributions, and I apologise if I have omitted something you thought important.

The calendar of Holy Days is from Common Worship. Each week there are prayer biddings from the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, uniting us with Anglicans around the world.

Each week also contains petitions for some of the following: Diocesan officers, chaplaincies, local institutions, social, political and economic concerns, those who suffer, the wider world and international agencies. We also include some items from the Bishop’s diary, and some key Diocesan events or meetings.

I will be contacting clergy whose benefices feature in the next quarter (July -

Sept) asking them to send in their prayer requests.

I would value any suggestions or comments about the content and layout – please send to me, Brian.

A NEW VISION FOR

THE CHURCH

I believe we need to recapture a vision of what the church could be and should be.

Otherwise we will just be completely taken up with busy-ness: service rotas, arranging funerals, attending PCCs, and raising money, as we watch our churches slowly declining.

Surely the Mission of the church is to carry forward the work of Christ :

‘he has sent me to announce good news to the poor, proclaim release for the prisoners, and recovery of sight for the blind, to let broken victims go free…’ Much of this work in the parish comes under the heading of pastoral care, as we try to share something of the love of God with those in any kind of need.

Do we really care about people, and want to help them find new life and hope? ( ‘I have come that they might have life, life in all its fullness’

). Do we really want to be channels of

God’s healing love, helping people to find wholeness and healing, of body, mind and spirit? And be prepared to offer practical help?

Each of our churches, or the churches together in a benefice, could be a kind of health centre, a community that provides loving support to one another, and others in need. But how strong are our local church communities?

‘It is in caring for one another that a healing community is born’.

(Report: Time to heal p. 127) An effective Healing Ministry needs to be supported by a properly organised system of pastoral care. Pastoral care is vital for church growth, but it needs organising or it will never happen, or it will only cater for some and not others.

We need teams of lay people: caring for one another within the church and reaching out to others in need in the local community.

16

We face a very uncertain economic future.

Many in our local communities are finding the going tough. What an opportunity for the church to show the love of Christ. But are we up to it?

The role of the clergy. With fewer and fewer full time clergy (20/20) the work of pastoral care will have to be done by teams of laity. The clergy’s role is not to try and do all the pastoral work themselves, but to support, encourage and equip the laity to do it. We need to train our laity to share in the various areas of pastoral care, which will include praying for and with people.

Prayer is vital.

It is what makes our caring different. We believe as Christians that for people to find inner strength and peace, hope for living and coping with the stresses and strains of life, they need to know and experience the love of God. So above all those of us involved in pastoral care need to be men and women of prayer, ready to pray with people when it is appropriate. And when we pray for and with people we are truly involved in the wholeness & healing ministry of the church.

Prayer ministry in church. When we pray with people during or after a service, this can be seen as a focus for all our pastoral work. The hands that hold and gently touch bring together all the caring that is going on

(or should be) in our churches through the week. What could be more important, as we share in the ministry of Christ?

To the lost Christ shows his face; to the unloved he gives his embrace; to those who cry in pain or disgrace

Christ makes with his friends a touching place.

Wholeness & Healing
