Resources for Researching Film
A comprehensive listing of abstracting and indexing databases available via the library can be
found via the Library's home page: http://library.berkeley.edu/
Look under LIBRARY COLLECTIONS: Electronic Indexes & Abstracts.
Many of the databases that the library subscribes to are available to users on the UC
Berkeley campus or users of the UCB modem pool only. UCB students, faculty, and staff
may access these databases

International Index to Film/TV Periodicals
Includes International Index to Film/TV Periodicals which indexes periodicals and other
documents covering cinema and television in the 58 countries comprising the International
Federation of Film Archives. Coverage: 1972 - present. Citations only (no full text or links to
UCB holdings)
Expanded Academic Index
Contains records for articles from popular magazines, general interest journals, scholarly
journals and newspapers in the humanities, social sciences, and general sciences. The
complete text of articles (including some full-text images) are available for many of the
journals covered in the database. Coverage includes 1980 to the present. For coverage
earlier than 1980, consult printed index: Readers Guide to periodical Literature in Main
Library reference hall.
MLA [Modern Language Assn.] Bibliography
Includes international coverage of materials in the areas of literature, languages, linguistics,
and folklore. The database contains over 1 million citations from over 4,000 journals, series,
books, essay collections, working papers, proceedings, dissertations, and bibliographies.
Coverage includes 1963 -present.
Art Abstracts/Art Abstracts Retrospective
The Art Abstracts database contains citations to items from over 300 international
publications, including journals, film reviews, bibliographies, conference reports, review
articles, and interviews. Journals indexed include: Cahiers du Cinema, Sight and Sound,
American Cinematographer, Screen, Film Comment, Films in Review, Film Quarterly, Journal
of Popular Film and Television Coverage includes 9/84 to present. Art Index Retrospective
covers the years 1929-1984.
America: History and Life/Modern History Abstracts (best for history/criticism of US
cinema)
America: History and Life contains citations to articles on the history of the United States and
Canada from prehistory to the present. The database covers over 2,000 journals published
worldwide. Historical Abstracts is a bibliographic database containing citations to articles on
the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada)
Other Relevant Databases and Resources:
Essay & General Literature Index
Cites essays and articles contained in collections of essays and miscellaneous works
published in the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. More than 300 volumes are
indexed annually. Additionally, more than 20 annuals and serial publications are indexed.
EGL focuses on the humanities and social sciences, with subject coverage ranging from
economics, political science, and history to criticism of literary works, drama, and film.

Periodicals Contents Index
Periodicals Contents Index, 1770-1995, is an electronic index to articles in the arts,
humanities and social sciences since 1770. The focus of PCI is on journals produced
throughout the twentieth century; journals beginning in the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries which continue into the twentieth are published from their inception.
International Index to the Performing Arts
Coverage: Includes retrospective citations from 46 periodicals,dating back to 1864. Citations
only; no links to UC holdings. IIPA draws its current content from more than 130
international periodicals and also indexes articles and obituaries appearing in the New York
Times and the Washington Post. Most records contain an abstract.
Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL) - UCB Only
Contains citations for monographs, periodical articles, critical editions of literary works, book
reviews, collections of essays and doctoral dissertations. Some citations are linked to full-text
(e.g. for articles in Literature/Film Quarterly) and more are being added every day. Coverage
includes 1920 to the present.
Film Literature Index [Print Index] In Media Center 1973(1)-1999(27)Covers 150 film and television periodicals from 30 countries indexed from cover to cover. 200
other periodicals selectively indexed for articles on film and television. Periodicals range from
scholarly, critical, technical to popular, including film/TV journals, and other titles in the fields
of literature, rhetoric, popular culture, cultural theory. Does not include journals devoted to
fan interests, totally technical data, or short press release information. Quarterly; 1973 to
present, with annual cumulations.
