The Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) concentration is designed to develop expertise in the nursing care of perinatal patients and their families. The graduates of Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist program are prepared to function as advanced practice nurses whose roles may include the following areas: teaching, research, consultation and practice. Two perinatal concentrations are available: the obstetrical focus and the neonatal focus. The Perinatal CNS student examines the role across the three spheres of CNS influence: the nurse/nursing practice sphere, the patient/client sphere and the organization/system sphere. The graduates may obtain an Illinois APN license by after completing certification in obstetrics or neonatal practice offered by the National Certification Corporation (NCC).
