At Jedburgh Grammar School we believe that the partnership between parents/carers and teachers works best when we work together to improve the attainment and achievement of pupils. WHY IS HOMEWORK IMPORTANT? This is why we are letting you know how to help your child with their homework and studying. Homework helps your child to: Make your home a homework & study friendly environment. Learn how to organise and manage time. Take more responsibility for their own learning Provide space if you can for your child to complete homework with table, chair and peace Try to make regular time for schoolwork in the evenings and at weekends. If possible, provide your child with the opportunity to use ICT for e-mailing or word processing homework, and for internet research tasks you can set with your child. Practise and build on what they have learned at school. Develop confidence to deal with difficulties. Learn and work independently in the future. IT’S A FACT When schools and families work together, children do better. Children learn something well when they talk about it or explain it to someone else, so asking your child about their homework really helps them. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? No homework or studying in the homework diary? Help your child to be prepared for school! Children who do homework regularly throughout their time at school benefit from the equivalent of approximately one extra year of schooling. Provide your child with a bag and make sure they use it. Ask to see their pupil planner regularly. Between the ages of 5 and 16 children spend only 15% of their lives in school, so supporting them at home really improves their chances of success. Show an interest! Have knowledge of what your child is learning in each subject by using information from the school or speaking to your child about what they are learning. Talk to your child about school work in general. Check over homework with your child. Sign homework where appropriate. Encourage your child to take on the advice given by teachers through reports and parents evenings. Parents and families are by far the most important influences on their lives. Encourage your child to read and talk to them about what they are reading. Make use of homework time if there is no specific homework from school by doing school subject related projects, research, looking over notes, learning vocabulary, etc. Contact your child’s Pastoral Teacher if you are concerned about lack of homework. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOUR CHILD PREPARE FOR TESTS & ASSESSMENTS? WHERE TO GO FOR HELP & SUPPORT JEDBURGH GRAMMAR SCHOOL Check that your child knows how to revise. The following web sites will provide help and also revision exercises for your child. All pupils at JGS should know what their preferred learning style is. Visit the school website (on the Parent/Carer page click on ‘How You Can Help’) and find out preferred learning styles as well as study tips to go with this learning style. Your child must know the topics to revise for each subject to organise study time effectively. Teachers will help with this. It is important to study one subject and one topic at a time. Help your child to succeed. Get them to leave tv, computer games, texting, phone-calls etc until the study session is over. Music may or may not be a good revision aid. Encourage them to take exercise, eat well, drink water and sleep well. http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/parentz one http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/brainsmart http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize and then follow Scottish qualifications links http://www.jedburghgs.co.uk/how-can-youhelp Bank of websites noted here for specific subjects or generic use http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/schools/websi tes/11_16/site/study_skills.shtml Pupils can use GLOW (accessed via the link on the school website) for accessing materials and websites used in classes and also for accessing the Pupil Common Room area – this is accessed via the National Site tab and contains a wealth of materials that supports studying Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Pastoral Teacher about any homework or study issues.
