2013 Fundraising Support & Sponsorship Packet CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Children's Hospital Foundation cultivates philanthropic partnerships to foster medical excellence to meet the unique needs of children and families within our communities. Our vision is to ensure superior technology and clinical services to provide advanced medical care specifically for children, to attract the highest caliber pediatric medical professionals and to give families the confidence to make Children's Hospital their first choice in pediatric care. The support of our donor family makes a tremendous impact on our healing work. Through the support of community partners, Children's Hospital Foundation: □ □ □ □ □ Supports programs that enhance family-centered care and that create a kid-friendly environment including Child Life, Social Work, playrooms, art & music therapy and other key programs to make Children's Hospital a supportive environment for kids and their parents. Advances a variety of community health, prevention and safety programs including car seat clinics, bike safety programs, health fairs, The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile and other outreach and educational efforts. Champions quality and enhances patient safety through efforts such as quality and safety benchmarking and educational programs and capital acquisitions to implement best practices such as replacing every IV infusion pump in Children's Hospital with "smart pumps" that help eliminate dosage errors for IV medications to children. Expands and enhances the healing environment and key technology in clinical areas such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Oncology Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and General Pediatric Clinic. Enables the purchase of new technology in an environment uniquely designed for kids, such as the creation of the new Emily Ransom CT Ranch which provides high quality, low radiation radiology scans for kids in an area decorated to look like a Western Ranch to reduce the anxiety of young patients. The Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders Each year, about 50 children from our area are diagnosed with childhood cancer. Fortunately, these children have access to the latest cancer treatments right here at home through the children’s cancer center at Children’s Hospital. The Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Hospital opened in 1986 and is a member of the largest cancer research organization in the world, Children’s Oncology Group. This means doctors at Children’s Hospital have access to the same research and treatments as some of the best research labs and hospitals in the world, so a child in Chattanooga receives the same treatments as a child at any other COG hospital including Duke, St. Jude or The Cleveland Clinic. But, for patients and their families, the children’s cancer clinic is more than a place to receive treatment – it’s also a home away from home. In fact, when you enter the cancer center, you hardly realize you’re in a hospital thanks to colorful murals, an inviting playroom and animal-shaped examining tables. As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, your gift is deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Kennedy and her mom Pam The 3rd Annual Jack’s Chattanoggins to benefit the Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders - In memory of Kennedy “The Warrior” Griffith The definition of the word champion is "one who fights; a warrior." And that is precisely how we'll remember our 2011 Children’s Hospital at Erlanger Champion ambassador, "Kennedy the Warrior" Griffith, who passed away December 18, 2012. She faced her battle with bone cancer with inspiring strength, honesty, openness and humor. Kennedy was a writer, an artist, a music lover and a beautiful role model to fellow patients, her family and her entire community. Her actions and attitude spoke volumes. We'll forever take her encouraging words to heart as we work to raise funds to provide a better healing environment for kids with cancer in the Chattanooga area. "Don't give up on anything because it's hard." – Kennedy Griffith The Children’s Cancer Center is on track to diagnose between 50 and 60 new patients this year (about one a week). We take care of 95% of the children’s needs right here in Chattanooga. On average, the Center will see 75 kids a week in clinic and about 7 kids remain inpatient at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. The Center will see 300 kids a month in the outpatient cancer clinic . The Center is actively involved in cutting edge clinical trials. Curable means that the cancer does not come back and these children will grow up into adults and have kids and live their lives. Cancer doesn’t just affect the child. It affects the entire family. If you are going to support childhood cancer, please support it locally. We are regionally based and serve a radius that reaches 4 states. (TN,GA, NC, AL) 40% of our patients are from North Georgia. Children today are treated more aggressively. That makes cure rates and long term side effects higher. Treatment times can last over 3 years. Because children are sicker with the aggressive treatment it is important for the child and family to be close to home during treatment. Children get at least 2 to 3 times the treatment than adults. In the past there was only one oncologist at Children’s Hospital, now there are four! The Center has four oncologists, nurses, child life specialist and social worker in the oncology clinic. It is important to take care of the psychosocial needs of the kids and their families. Even when a child is cured of cancer, the psychosocial issues may still be there for some time. The Center does not turn anyone away if they cannot pay. We have made tremendous advances in cancer; there are still some forms of cancer that we are struggling with. Research is still heavily needed. On Sunday, June 9th, at The Chattanooga Market, our team will shave our heads in solidarity with the kids of Chattanooga that are currently battling cancer. A few years back, teenager Jack Skowronnek decided he wanted to shave his head for kids with cancer and since 2010 he has invited the Chattanooga community to join him, and he’s asking for our help again. We hope you will join us in making miracles happen by joining our team or asking others to help us make miracles happen. <If you are participating as an individual: “If you would like to make a donation in honor of my efforts, please visit my fundraising page at <insert your personal link here>. Every donation, no matter the amount helps me to reach my goal.”> To join our team go to www.JacksChattanoggins.org, click on the register link and choose the join team option. Your participation will help bring joy and cheer to children during an otherwise troubling time. Many of the oncology patients have to stay hundreds of nights in the hospital, kids like Rachel, pictured here. Rachel was rarely sick, but in August of 2011 she knew things weren’t right. Rachel had persistent symptoms of super dry skin and hair loss and really didn’t feel like herself. A knot was then found under her arm and at first she was given stronger antibiotics. But, there was still no improvement to her condition. A biopsy was done and the pathology report came showed she had lymphoma. But even with the news, Rachel refused to slow down. Through weekly chemotherapy treatments, Rachel continues to play basketball and has even played with a feeding tube in place. Rachel is also playing volleyball and enjoys being a cheerleader. She is already thinking about her college options and is interested in becoming a CRNA and going on medical mission trips. If you are unable to join our team or participate in Jack’s Chattanoggins, you can make a tax deductible donation to our team by going to <insert team website> or by mailing a check made out to Children’s Hospital Foundation in the stamped and addressed envelope enclosed.
