Updating the List - UK Medicines Information

advertisement
Resources for Purchase
by NHS Medicines Information Services
This is a list of resources that need to be purchased (books, databases, websites/web-based
resources, journals etc.) which are considered essential for MI services to provide a safe and
efficient service to users. It should be used in conjunction with ‘Resources with Free Access For
NHS Medicines Information Services’ in order to provide a comprehensive service. Other UKMi
resources give guidance on what resources to use when, e.g. UKMi workbook, Enquiry Answering
Guidelines. There is also guidance on the risks associated with the use of various resources
available at www.ukmi.nhs.uk/filestore/ukmiacg/Risk-CommonInformationSources2.doc.
The resources are organised into general subject categories. It is recognised that the requirements
of individual MI centres (MICs) are different and will depend on the service offered by each centre,
the size of the base hospital and the nature of the Trust in which the unit is situated. Where this
affects the holding of a resource, this is indicated. ISBN numbers are included when appropriate
and approximate costs stated (see also UKMi Discounted Subscriptions section and Appendix 1
below). Editions and associated publication dates are also included.
Resources are annotated ‘C’ or ‘A’ where:
C = Core resources for all MICs to hold (local and regional) – 100% required for QA purposes
A = Additional resources recommended to support services locally based on enquiry type and
Trust speciality. Recommendations and advice on additional resources held may be given via the
formal QA visit.
Please note that many books and journals are available from your library electronically. Check with
your librarian which resources on this list are purchased by them. If these are easily accessible to
all Trust staff then this may be sufficient for QA purposes.
UKMi Discounted Subscriptions
The UKMi Executive has negotiated a number of discounted subscriptions for resources. These
are indicated in the list with *UKMi Deal*. Further details of the discounts are provided in Appendix
1. Where costs are stated for an individual resource this applies to approximate full price rather
than inclusive of any discount available via a UKMi deal.
Updating the List
The Essential Resources list will be updated with new editions etc. on an ongoing basis and details
of any updated resources will be published on the ‘MI News’ section of the UKMi website. The
Clinical Governance Working Group will formally review the contents of the Essential Resources
list annually. The revised list will be published on the UKMi website. Updates to the list will be
reflected in the MiDatabank master list.
Suggestions for additions/deletions or general comments on this document can be forwarded to
helen.davis@lrippu.nhs.uk or via your regional centre.

Journals
MI centres should ensure they have access to journals via their local library facilities for references.
Journal subscription has been recommended in the past as a means of current awareness. However, with
the advent of daily news feeds this recommendation is no longer relevant.
Routine journal subscription is at the discretion of the individual centre.
