Index to Bernice Hottinger’s Collection of Obituaries During her lifetime, Bernice Hottinger has collected various obituaries. Later in life she began placing them in a spiral notebook. After her brother-in-law, Shelby Hottinger, passed away in 1991, Bernice contacted me about her book of obituaries. She wanted it preserved and handed down. I went to her home and stayed with her for quite awhile. Mrs. Hottinger told me a few stories about her mother, and we chatted about her two grandsons whom I know because I am a school teacher. Actually, Bernice Hottinger and I are each descendants of Richard Young. She descends from Richard Young and his first wife, Pernecia Jane McKinley Young, and I descend from Richard Young and his second wife, Caroline Susannah Linam Chambers Young. Since the time the book of obituaries was photocopied by me, Bernice Hottinger’s husband, Raymond, has passed away. I cleaned out my files this summer and came across the photocopies I had made for Mrs. Hottinger. I decided at that time that it was finally time to do something with her book, so I contacted her son who placed me back in touch with his mother. Consequently, this week I again visited with Bernice Hottinger. We chatted for some time, and I showed her the book of her collected obituaries I am presenting to the library. Bernice told me that she has four or five more books of obituaries to be worked on and twenty-eight albums of family pictures. Again, since she and I are both descended from Richard Young, and I am interested in family history, I imagine I will be spending quite a bit of time with Mrs. Hottinger in the future. We will be planning at least Volume II. Right before I left, Bernice Hottinger told me she is eighty-nine years old. What a remarkable woman! She has chronicled 89 years’ worth of information about her family and friends. This week I presented the book to Laura Shull at the Pope County Library. It will be placed in the Genealogy Section of the Russellville Branch of the Pope County Library System. -–Jacquelyn Bonds Adkison, Ouida, 82 Adkison, Reece, 107 Agnew, Julia, 104 Austin, Jess, 73 Baker, Billy E., 18 Baker, Garland Ray III, 30 Baker, William E., Sr., 93 Barker, James R., 70 Bartlett, Ronell, 74 Barton, Rona Crandle, 35 Berry, Floyd Ellis, 1 Berry, Jack E., 2 Berry, Lavienia Poynter, 1 Berry, Nora Ellen, 2 Berry, Robert, 84 Berry, Susie Ruth, 1 Berry, Timmy, 2 Berry, W. Among the obituaries are Margaret F. Eudy who died in 1924 and Mack Sturgis who died in 1986. Mrs. Eudy, of Dover, was born Feb. 18, 1858, daughter of W.W. and Martha E. Young, and married E.M. Eudy on Jan. 10, 1878. Sturgis, also of Dover, was the father of the late Mrs. Bobbye McAlister of Russellville who died in 2005 after serving a number of years as Pope County tax collector. Sturgis' career included 10 years as state purchasing agent and 15 months as state Highway Department director. – Laura Shull Postscript: The final format of this book includes all of Mrs. Hottinger’s obituaries through Nov. of 2004. When I visited with Bernice last week, she did give me additional information. She said she worked at the shoe factory for twenty-five years and that some of the obituaries were those of friends from work. I intend to submit for publication Part II (which is already included here) in the March or June issue of the Pope County Historical Association Quarterly, and, in addition, I intend to place the information on the Internet. –Jacquelyn Bonds
