About the Luce Environmental Science to Solutions Fellowship
The Luce Environmental Science to Solutions Fellowship Program is designed to educate
Ph.D. students on the full trajectory from the identification of important environmental issues to the implementation of solutions. The Fellowship Program welcomes students from a range of scientific disciplines. Luce Fellows will receive specialized training in leadership, communication, and ecoinformatics. They also will have opportunities for collaborative research, real world problem-solving, and information sharing among science, policy, and corporate arenas. Students will experience the advantages of crossdisciplinary teamwork and will become acquainted with political, legal, and economic dimensions of environmental challenges.
The Luce Environmental Science to Solutions Fellowship will begin on January 1, 2008 .
Fellowships are granted for three years. Twelve Luce Fellows will be selected each year.
In their first year, Luce Fellows will
Receive $3,000 to be applied to studies, supplies, travel to professional meetings, or other activities that enhance the student’s educational experience.
Participate in a graduate seminar focused on the interface between science and policy.
Receive training in ecoinformatics.
Attend a working group of researchers and practitioners at the National Center for
Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) in Santa Barbara.

In their second year, Luce Fellows will
Receive $3,000 to be applied to studies, supplies, travel to professional meetings, or other activities that enhance the student’s educational experience.
Receive training in communication of science to policy makers, media, NGOs, resource managers, and industry.
Initiate or participate in a two-year Luce Environmental Working Group at
NCEAS. Each student-led working group will be provided with a project budget enabling participation of experts from around the world.
In their third year, Luce Fellows will
Be encouraged to participate in the University of California’s Washington, D.C. or Sacramento programs.
Present their working group projects to an audience of non-academics.
Refine proposed environmental solutions that emerged from the working group’s activities based on feedback from practitioners, including elected officials and other policy makers.
Eligibility and Award Terms
Students must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in mathematics, life or physical science, social science, environmental science, or engineering at the University of California,
Santa Barbara. Students must have at least three years of graduate studies remaining before degree conferral.
Fellows will receive $6,000, divided into two payments of $3,000 each. Payment will be made in January in the first and second years of the Fellowship. As noted above, Fellows may apply the award to a broad range of activities that enhance the Fellow’s educational experience.

Please include your last name in the file name. Letters of recommendation (see below) sent on your behalf should include your last name and the sender’s last name in some part of the file name. Please *do not lock* PDF documents as they will be merged with other application materials (such as recommendation letters) to make review more efficient.

How will the Luce award and training enhance your professional goals?
(3) Letters: Three (3) letters of recommendation. Letters should be written by individuals familiar with the applicant’s skills, experience, and research. Letters should emphasize the qualifications of the applicant. Each referee must submit an electronic copy of their letter to pedroso@msi.ucsb.edu
. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that reference letters are submitted by the deadline.

Selection Criteria, Process, and Notification
Fellows are selected according to three criteria: 1) perceived potential for innovation and leadership, 2) commitment to environmental problem-solving, and 3) strength of recommendations.
An ideal Luce Fellow is an innovative, practical-minded student with strong leadership potential. She or he will have an interest in developing 1) analytical skills to integrate and synthesize information and 2) communication skills to share scientific information for environmental problem-solving.
Applications will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary committee of faculty representing various divisions, colleges, and institutes of science, mathematics, and engineering at the
University of California, Santa Barbara. Applicants will be notified of the status of their applications on December 3, 2007 .
Fellowships start on January 1, 2008 .
