The History of the Quag pt.1 by Colin Bardwell Grade 7 Ms Maher’s advisory What you are about to see are the journals of Naaq’ Mir. These journals are unabridged and are declassified as of year 6274. Much government research has been done based on this. The journals are now used for entertainment purposes. Naaq’ Day 1These are the journals I keep for use. A translator is typing these words so Earth People can see. I not know good English, so they say it will sound happy. I do not understand that. My name is Naaq’ Mir. I came from the planet of Mecatch’kul. We found a planet that the Earth People not see, so I come to show them. My people have seen mysterious planet. This translator make me angry, he do not know good talk. Naaq’ Day 2We are going fast in Earth People container. We are going to mysterious planet. Earth Person will type by himself now and I will help go to mysterious planet. Director Roberts Journal entry Voyage day: 2The alien is cooperating well. He has been arguing with our translator quite a bit, apparently about their language. It seems that all unmanned exploration to the planet fails, so his cooperation is quite necessary. Speaking of the alien, he is quite interesting. He seems to be robotically enhanced. He is also quite intelligent. We let him explore the ship, regretfully. He immediately hacked into the artificial gravity system with ease. We were all in zero gravity for a few minutes until we figured out what happened. It’s about time I got back to navigating with the alien, which for all who are curious is a very unique experience. Naaq’ Day 3I have a new translator now. She understands my language very well. I can know speak without being interrupted, which is quite relieving. So now on to the good news! I have successfully led the Earth People to the mysterious planet. They saw it, and immediately did something that perplexed me. They did this thing with their mouths that I don’t understand. They said that it was a sign of much joy. The bad news is that the Earth People want to approach the planet. I must try and warn them to use an unmanned vehicle to explore first. Goodbye. Director Roberts Journal entry Voyage day: 3I have decided that I will write these journal entries as part of the alien’s journal, for future reference. But on to business. The alien is telling us that our ship will be destroyed if we come near the planet. This theory is interesting, and I just might look into it. The reason is because our radar gets fried if we get within 10,000 miles of the planet. Not jammed, but completely shut down. It also seems that other electronic devices are affected, and that some people even pass out. We have retreated to 15,000 miles away, and are coming up with ideas. I will record my ideas later. Naaq’ Day 5The Earth People have listened to my idea. They couldn’t think of anything else to do. I watched on the screen as the machine was sent out into outer space. They used a computer to control it. As soon as it got close enough to see the planet, the screen went black. The Earth People said that they couldn’t see the planet using the radar because there were crazy gravimagnetic pulses coming from the planet. (Entries missing) Director Roberts Journal entry Voyage day: 157IT’S ABOUT TIME WE GOT THROUGH TO THAT DANG PLANET! We’ve thrown everything we could at it. Missiles, trash, even our old translator (that guy was a jerk; at least we gave him a space suit though). Somehow, we got the alien to float down completely naked, survive the float to the planet, and bring back news. It was a miracle. Well, the alien was a little shaken, but this is what we got out of them. There are creatures on that planet, which, by the way, is a living thing. These creatures can control the flow of the extremely powerful gravi-magnetic pulses constantly pulsing from the planet. If these creatures leave the planet, the planet will basically explode, and if the creatures are exposed to anything other than the flow of magnetic pulses and gravity they are used to, something interesting happens. I will explain it all later, I must conduct research now. Director Roberts Journal entry Voyage day: 160So, apparently these creatures (which we will now call the Quag [kw-awg]) use the gravi-magnetic waves of their planet to communicate, to move, everything! They don’t have limbs or sensory organs, but they have extremely weak eyes that only sense brightness of light. Thinking about it, if the planet’s untamed pulses can destroy an entire ship, these creatures could be devastatingly powerful. It’s a good thing they aren’t sentient. END The following journals have been found in pieces. Once we determine what they say, they will be used for official research. Unfortunately, this is all we know of the Quag, considering the ship has been lost with no communication for 125 years now.
